Biosafety of bee pollinators in genetically modified agro‐ecosystems: Current approach and further development in the EU

Abstract: Bee pollinators are an important guild delivering a fundamental input to European agriculture due to the ecological service they provide to crops in addition to the direct economic revenues from apiculture. Bee populations are declining in Europe as a result of the effects of several environmental stressors, both natural and of anthropic origin. Efforts are ongoing in the European Union (EU) to improve monitoring and management of pollinator populations to arrest further declines. Genetically modified (GM) cro… Show more

“…The advantages of RNAi-mediated pest control indicate its potential for future field application [43][44][45]. However, a fundamental step in this direction is the development of appropriate risk assessment tools to generate reliable data for registration purposes [29,[46][47][48].…”

“…Crops with pesticide properties that have been genetically engineered may have a negative, influence on bees but the not lethal. This concern regarding genetically modified crops negative impacts, on the other hand, has not been proven (Arpaia et al, 2021). Pollen from Bacillus thuringiensis, Bt.…”

“…Genetically modified crops and organisms are not the real part of nature and they tend to distort the balance in nature. They increasingly dominate the local species, and hence they should be discouraged [50].…”
