Biopolymeric Film Containing Bioactive Naphthoquinone (Shikonin) in Combined Therapy of Inflammatory Destructive Lesions in the Buccal Mucosa

Abstract: Clinical morphological efficiency of local application of a new biopolymeric film was studied. The film was based on methylcellulose derivatives and contained shikonin (preparation of plant origin) and its esters isolated from Lithospermum erythrorhizon L. cell culture. Combined therapy of 30 patients (34-72 years) with erosive ulcerative lichen planus and leukoplakia of the buccal mucosa was carried out. Local application of the new drug led to more rapid pain relief, epithelialization of the inflammatory des… Show more

“…Shikonin is also a potent and specific PKM2 inhibitor 21 . It has been demonstrated that shikonin has interesting pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, and wound healing effects 15 , also proven to be safe in clinical trials 31 , 32 . Furthermore, shikonin has the additional effect of antagonizing hepatic, renal, skin and other tissue fibrosis 32 - 34 .…”

“…Shikonin and alkannin, respectively the S‐ and R‐isomers of naphthoquinone, (Figure ) displayed no difference in pharmacological activity to the synthetic product (Kourounakis, Assimopoulou, Papageorgiou, Gavalas, & Kourounakis, ). Shikonin and its derivatives have also been used as natural pigments in cosmetics, as a biological active ingredient in anti‐inflammatories (Lu et al, ), abirritations (Gupta et al, ), antimicrobials (Miao et al, ), and antioxidatives (Z. H. Wang et al, ), as a wound healing agent, and as the main component of Lithospermum oil and film agent, for the treatment of burns (Zagorodnyaya et al, ). Furthermore, shikonin has been reported to have potent antitumor effects against various tumors, including osteosarcoma, leukemia, breast cancer, and carcinoma of salivary gland (Chang, Huang, Chiang, Yeh, & Hsu, ; Mao, Yu, Li, & Li, ; Yao & Zhou, ).…”
