This work presents useful composites for oil spill cleanup processes. These systems are composed of a polyester matrix loaded with coffee ground powder and maghemite. They were prepared by in situ polymerization. The aliphatic monomers proportion-castor oil and glycerin-was studied with the aim of understanding the effect of feed ratio on the product properties. The materials were studied using several techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet-visible Spectrophotometry, and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering, with magnetic force tests used for the characterization of materials. Density tests showed the presence of coffee grounds causes an important reduction in the density values of composites, improving their flotation. The interaction between composites and petroleum is more than twice that between composites and water. Moreover, for all magnetizable composites, the removal capability was (25.1 6 1.2) g/g (petroleum/composite), allowing us to state that this is a promising material for use in oil spill cleanup processes.

Experimental design technique (DoE) is applied to determine the best chemical composition of alkyd resins used as a matrix in magnetizable composites, which are an excellent tool in aquatic environmental cleanup processes. The alkyd resins are obtained from phthalic anhydride, castor oil, and glycerin, a byproduct of biodiesel production, that makes this kind of matrix ecologically friendly polymeric materials. Maghemite nanoparticles are used as filler in the prepared magnetizable composites. Obtained materials are characterized using wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transformed (FTIR), and ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy (UV‐Vis). Besides, magnetic force test and oil removal capability test, which is the most important property in this case, are also performed. According to experimental results, melt mixing process used to prepare these nanocomposites do not change the monodomains size of the nanoparticles. On the other hand, the nanocomposites present magnetic force higher than the one from the pure maghemite, probably due to a better distribution of the nanoparticles inside the matrix. Also, composites present an excellent oil cleanup capability, since, in the best case, 1 g of the hybrid material is able to remove more than 20 g of the oil from the water.

This work reports the use of acrylated fatty acid methyl ester (AFAME) as a biomonomer for the synthesis of bio‐based hybrid magnetic particles poly(styrene‐co‐AFAME)/γ‐Fe2O3 produced by miniemulsion polymerization. Poly(styrene‐co‐AFAME)/γ‐Fe2O3 can be tailored for use in various fields by varying the content of AFAME. The strategy employed is to encapsulate superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) as γ‐Fe2O3 into a styrene/AFAME‐based copolymer matrix. Raman spectroscopy is employed to ensure the formation of the SPIONs (γ‐Fe2O3) obtained by a co‐precipitation technique followed by oxidation of Fe3O4. The functionalization of SPIONs with oleic acid (OA) is carried out to increase the SPIONs–monomer affinity. The presence of OA on the surface of γ‐Fe2O3 is certified by identification of main absorption bands by fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermal analysis (differential thermogravimetry/differential thermo analysis and differential scanning calorimetry) results of poly(styrene‐co‐AFAME)/γ‐Fe2O3 show an increase in AFAME content leading to a lower copolymer glass transition temperature (T g). Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements result in poly(styrene‐co‐AFAME)/γ‐Fe2O3 particles with diameter in the range of 100–150 nm. It is also observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cryo‐TEM techniques that γ‐Fe2O3 particles are successfully encapsulated into the poly(styrene‐co‐AFAME) matrix.
