Macroalgal assemblages have been used as a quality element for the assessment of the ecological status classes (ESCs) in coastal water bodies for the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC). To assess the suitability of this quality element in the coastal waters off Algiers, seven sampling sites with five (5) replications covering a wide range of anthropogenic pressures were studied during spring and summer 2015. Coverage data for the macroalgae at each sampling site were analyzed at the biological levels of species, i.e., structural (species number, nMDS, clustering, K-dominance and Simper analysis based on Bray-Curtis similarity), and ecological status groups, i.e., functional (nMDS, clustering, K-dominance, ecological evaluation index/EEI-c). Key water variables (temperature, salinity and pH) along with the anthropogenic stress index MALUSI were also estimated. The obtained results revealed a significant effect of anthropogenic stress on the macroalgal assemblages. The structural analysis showed the following: (1) species richness of 86 taxa in total; (2) dominance of Cystoseira amentacea var. stricta (late-successional) associated with Lithophyllum incrustans and Jania rubens at nonimpacted sites and with Ulva rigida, Ulva intestinalis and Caulerpa cylindracea (opportunistic) species at impacted sites; and (3) a higher proportion of low-abundance species in polluted communities than in less polluted communities. The functional analysis showed the following: (1) classification of sites based on multivariate and K-dominance analyses into four groups, three in agreement with the water degradation information and one in agreement with a low salinity influence; (2) classification of sites into "bad", "high", "moderate" and "good" ESCs based on the EEI-c index; and (3) a strong nonlinear relationship (R²=0.85) of the EEI-c index with the MALUSI index. Therefore, the EEI-c index will be a suitable tool to implement a national monitoring program within the scope the WFD along Algerian coasts.

The utility of some biomarkers in environmental monitoring may be limited due to the lack of knowledge that exists on how they respond to extrinsic abiotic and intrinsic biotic factors. During the present study we investigated the seasonal responses of three biomarkers, Neutral Red Retention, clearance/filtration rate and heart rate in the common blue mussel Mytilus edulis located in the Exe Estuary, UK during September 2006-September 2007. During the current study, a significant decrease in feeding rate was observed in mussels during June, July and August 2007, coinciding with the period following spawning when the mussels lay down nutrient reserves. Heart rate also increased between April and September 2007 and corresponded with times when mussels were spawning and laying down nutrient reserves. By integrating the individual biomarker responses into a Biomarker Response Index (BRI) we were able to identify times of the year when environmental impact was highest and hence when the timing of monitoring programmes using biomarkers should be carried out. For many years the lack of knowledge of normal physiological ranges of biomarkers has impeded their applied use, however by integrating biomarker responses into the BRI and creating an index of health, we have shown that we can limit the natural variability of individual responses; and thus we are better able to make informed judgements on the overall health status of these populations of mussels.

INTRODUCCIÓNLos niveles de metales pesados en algunas zonas costeras del estado Sucre (Venezuela) han incrementado recientemente a causa antropogénica (Martínez 2002 ABSTRACT. The green mussel Perna viridis has been used as a sentinel organism in marine and coastal ecosystem health assessments. In this study the degree of contamination at three sites on the coast of Sucre State (Venezuela) was analyzed using molecular, cellular, and immunological biomarkers in P. viridis. Specimens were collected from Chacopata-Guayacán (CG, Araya Peninsula), Río Caribe (RC, Paria Peninsula), and San Antonio del Golfo (SAG, southern Gulf of Cariaco). We determined the concentration of heavy metals in the soft tissue of each individual, as well as the total number, viability, phagocytosis, and stability of the lysosomal membranes in hemocytes. The oxidative damage to lipids (TBARS), sulfhydryl group levels, total proteins, and lysozyme activity were quantified in the digestive gland. The results revealed high concentrations of Zn, Cr, and Cd in the organisms from CG. The total hemolymph cell count was lower in organisms from RC and CG. A slight increase in the number of phagocytes was observed in the organisms from RC and CG relative to those from SAG. The highest percentage of hemocytes with destabilized lysosomal membranes was recorded for the organisms from CG, followed by RC, indicating a weak association with the content of peroxidized lipids (TBARS); these values could be associated with the body loads of heavy metals. According to the results, the mussels from CG show slight signs of contamination by heavy metals, likely originated by human activities. The use of biological markers to estimate the effect of heavy metals on sentinel organisms is recommended.Key words: antioxidant defenses, hemocytes, lysozymes, heavy metals, Perna viridis. RESUMEN. El mejillón verdePerna viridis ha sido usado como organismo biosensor de la salud de ecosistemas marino-costeros. Por tal motivo se procedió a evaluar el grado de contaminación de tres localidades costeras del estado Sucre (Venezuela) determinando biomarcadores a nivel molecular, celular e inmunológico en P. viridis. Los ejemplares fueron recolectados en las localidades de Chacopata-Guayacán (CG, península de Araya), Río Caribe (RC, península de Paria) y San Antonio del Golfo (SAG, región sur del golfo de Cariaco). Se determinó la carga de metales pesados en el tejido blando de cada individuo. Además, se valoró el número total, la viabilidad, la fagocitosis y la estabilidad de las membranas lisosomales en los hemocitos. El daño oxidativo de lípidos (TBARS), los niveles de grupos sulfhídrilos, las proteínas totales y la actividad de la lisozima fueron cuantificados en la glándula digestiva.
