Biomimetic Self-Healing Cementitious Construction Materials for Smart Buildings

Abstract: Climate change is anticipated to have a major impact on concrete structures through increasing rates of deterioration as well the impacts of extreme weather events. The deterioration can affect directly or indirectly climate change in addition to the variation in the carbon dioxide concentration, temperature and relative humidity. The deterioration that occurs from the very beginning of the service not only reduces the lifespan of the concretes but also demands more cement to maintain the durability. Meanwhile… Show more

“…The existing mortar crack is found to occur due to the tensile strength being much lower than the compressive strength [ 1 ]. This indicates that the recovery processes are being carried out through direct resealing with certain materials or self-healing, where capable elements are retrieved during the composite manufacturing process [ 2 ]. However, cement-based materials are widely used for construction needs, with the existence of knowledge on concrete and mortar, which differences are based on the composite elements.…”

“…The efficacy of the self-healing mechanism is enhanced via the immobilization, vascular, or encapsulation techniques that incorporate healing agents into the concrete. The self-repairing of damaged concrete surfaces using the bacteria-mediated biological processes has recently been proposed [12][13][14][15][16]. “…Currently, the entire planet is at risk due to continual climate change [1][2][3]. The recorded increase in average temperature across the world in the past hundred years, and the associated changes attributed to this, are known as global warming.…”
