Biomimetic optics: liquid-based optical elements imitating the eye functionality

Abstract: The optical systems mimicking the eye functions are of great importance in various applications including consumer electronics, medical equipment, machine vision systems and robotics. This optics offers advantages over traditional optical technologies such as the superior adaptation to changing conditions and the comprehensive range of functional characteristics at miniature sizes. This paper presents a review on the recent progress in the development of human eye-inspired optical systems. Liquid-based… Show more

“…Problems associated with the study of convective fluid flows continue to attract the keen interest of the scientific community. The concern is motivated by modern applications of omnigenous fluidic systems in different fields from microelectronics and thermophysics [1,2] to material science and biomedicine [35]. In many cases, the practical development of technologies is accompanied by extensive theoretical investigations, which, in some cases, can lead to a revision of standard mathematical models and approaches to the study of a certain class of problems.…”

“…The use of an actuation mechanism to regulate optical elements is attractive for framing cells and microorganisms 1,2 , tracking affected tissues during surgery 3 , augmenting human eye functions 4 , and developing biomimetic optical devices 5,6 . In particular, miniature tunable lens systems are useful for microscopic imaging applications.…”
