Agricultural biogas plants are increasingly being used in Europe as an alternative source of energy. To optimize the sizing and operation of existing or future biogas plants, a better knowledge of different feedstocks is needed. Our aim is to characterize 132 common agricultural feedstocks in terms of their chemical composition (proteins, fibers, elemental analysis, etc.) and biochemical methane potential shared in five families: agro-industrial products, silage and energy crops, lignocellulosic biomass, manure, and slurries. Among the families investigated, manures and slurries exhibited the highest ash and protein contents (10.3–13.7% DM). High variabilities in C/N were observed among the various families (19.5% DM for slurries and 131.7% DM for lignocellulosic biomass). Methane potentials have been reported to range from 63 Nm3 CH4/t VS (green waste) to 551 Nm3 CH4/t VS (duck slurry), with a mean value of 284 Nm3 CH4/t VS. In terms of biodegradability, lower values of 52% and 57% were reported for lignocelluloses biomasses and manures, respectively, due to their high fiber content, especially lignin. By contrast, animal slurries, silage, and energy crops exhibited a higher biodegradability of 70%. This database will be useful for project owners during the pre-study phases and during the operation of future agricultural biogas plants.

Feedstock resources for renewable natural gas (RNG) production by biological (e.g., anaerobic digestion) and thermochemical (e.g., gasification) conversion methods in Hawaii have been reviewed. Statewide estimates of RNG production potential from urban resources (wastewater, existing landfills, foodwaste, construction and demolition waste (CDW), and municipal solid waste) total 8860 TJ year À1 . Honolulu has the largest resource base for these urban waste streams. Underutilized agricultural land resources in the state could support substantial RNG production from dedicated energy crops (260-520 GJ ha À1 year À1 ), although agronomic suitability of specific candidate energy crops would need to be evaluated and confirmed.

The present Cuban economic model focuses on renewable sources of energy production, according to sustainable development strategies for 2030. However, the strategies do not consider biogas (or methane) due to, among other reasons, a lack of knowledge of its actual potential. Following the methodology of the batch anaerobic digestion process, the study shows the biomethane potential contained in the most critical agricultural solid wastesgenerated in Cuba, i.e., rice straw, cane straw, corn straw, bean straw, banana straw (leaves), coffee husk, and parchment coffee. Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) was assayed by lab-scale (585 ml) batch reactors, using the pig manure anaerobic sludge as inoculum under mesophilic conditions (35 ± 2 °C). Physicochemical parameters (total volatile solids, pH, alkalinity, volatile fatty acid concentration, and alkalinity ratio) were determined for processstability, quantifying the biogas production daily. Subsequently, the BMP was calculated for all substrates. The results showed that corn straw (0.42 l CH4 per gram of volatile solids) contained the highest biomethane potential. Stability on all systems was obtained, demonstrating the viability of the inoculum used to start digesters that treat this waste.The total potential methane obtained was 1258 106 m3/year, which is enough to generate 3,750 GWh of power per year—equivalent to 18 % of the total annual electricity generation in the country.
