Biomechanical findings in rats undergoing fascial reconstruction with graft materials suggested as an alternative to polypropylene

Abstract: In experimental conditions, sufficient strength was obtained only after 3 months, and PP containing constructs appeared as the strongest though reconstruction with Pelvicol showed comparable outcomes. Lower values for strength of non-cross linked and porous collagen materials are questioning their efficacy for pelvic floor reconstruction.

“…PeriPatch and Tutomesh still were intact, with margin zones appearing to break up slowly. It is unclear how and at what rate this process would have continued after 2 months, but studies evaluating this issue indicate a rapid loss of strength of similar matrices [22]. At autopsy, there was no scaffolding effect for the fibro or myoblasts of any matrix.…”

“…The number of animals was chosen from former short term studies with an identical animal model. 23,24 Data were tested for normality. Differences between groups were assessed by Student's t test for paired comparisons and by one way ANOVA with post Dunnet's analysis for multiple group comparison against a designated control group.…”

“…Vaginal hematomas and seromas are also consequences of recently developed urogynecologic techniques. Seromas are seen in sling procedures 34 and insertion of vaginal grafts 35 and meshes 36 . They can develop in patients after posterior vaginal reconstruction of rectoceles or enteroceles with biological grafts.…”
