Biomass partition and carbon storage of Cunninghamia lanceolata chronosequence plantations in Dabie Mountains in East China

Abstract: Abstract:The quantification of biomass carbon pools is important for understanding carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. This study was designed to reveal the effects of stand age on biomass partitioning and carbon storage of Chinese fir plantation stands in Dabie Mountains of Anhui, East China. A total of six even-aged Chinese fir plantation stands along an age-sequence from 10 to 50 years were selected. To quantify the biomass of different tree components, 18 trees with diameter at breast height (D 1.3 ) from… Show more

“…Data from a large geographical scale also illustrated continuously increasing C sequestration in an age as high as 30 years (Wang et al 2012;Chen et al 2013). Long-term stand age up to 50 years has been found to have an effect on C allocation with more C allocated to roots in older stands (Xie et al 2016). Current findings on age of Chinese fir stands are highly varied in location and management strategy.…”

“…Large-scale establishment of Chinese fir plantations exploded since the 1950s and peaked around the 1980s (Zhang et al 2004). For the purpose of climate change mitigation, the promotion of C sink in living storage has been the objective for planting and management of Chinese fir plantations since the 1980s (Zhang et al 2004;Zhao et al 2009;Yen and Lee 2011;Wang et al 2012;Liao et al 2014;Xie et al 2016;Cheng et al 2017;Tang et al 2017;Lei et al 2019;Saeed et al 2019).…”

“…Precise estimation of carbon pools in forest ecosystems are a necessary base for further activities. As carbon content in plant tissues is relatively constant, most inventories focus on biomass estimation [11][12][13][14]. For that reason, accuracy of biomass assessment is crucial for carbon reporting.…”

“…Usually stand biomass may be assessed using the two main approaches: allometric equations at both tree and stand levels (e.g., Baskerville 1972;Zianis et al 2005;Zasada et al 2008;Xie et al 2016;Forrester et al 2017) and…”
