Biomass gasification or combustion for generating electricity in Spain: Review of its current situation according to the opinion of specialists in the field

Abstract: This paper seeks to set out the problems of biomass-based electricity generation according to the opinions of specialists in the sector with considerable experience both in the undertaking of projects involving the management and operation of facilities, and in research projects involving combustion and gasification technologies. The aim is to analyse both technologies and decide which is the more suitable and in what circumstances, and to describe the technological and circumstantial problems each one current… Show more

“…Their energy conversion factor ranges from 0.5 to 0.8 [34,37]. According to experts' recommendations, gasification based crop residue technologies are preferable if their electrical power production is less than 2 MW [38]. Therefore, this technology is not widespread and still in the early commercial stages.…”

“…Por esta razón se utiliza este proceso para generar electricidad en desarrollos industriales. Desde hace más de 30 años se ha incrementado el interés sobre este tema, siendo Estados Unidos uno de los principales promotores de dicho proceso (Leung et al, 2004;Ruiz et al, 2013aRuiz et al, , 2013b. Esto se constata usando los datos de publicaciones en el área a partir de la base Scopus (2014).…”

“…There are mature and commercial energy sources, such as a direct-combustion furnace. There are also more efficient technologies that are still in development, such as gasification, which is a crucial process for the thermochemical conversion of biomass and may have a production capacity from a few kW to hundreds of MW (Ruiz et al, 2013). There are different types of biomass, and their characteristics determine the most suitable conversion pathway.…”
