Biomass and element pools of understory vegetation in the catchments of Čertovo Lake and Plešné Lake in the Bohemian Forest

Abstract: This paper presents data on species composition, biomass, and element pools (C, N, P, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Al, Fe, Mn) of the understory vegetation of spruce forests in the catchments of lakes Čertovo jezero (CT) and Plešné jezero (PL) in the Bohemian Forest (Šumava, Czech Republic). Calamagrostis villosa was the most abundant species in the CT catchment, while Vaccinium myrtillus was the most abundant species in the PL catchment. The catchments weighted mean (CWM) of above-ground biomass of the understory vegetatio… Show more

“…The Čertovo Lake watersheds are covered with 90-150 year-old Norway spruce forests, with sparse white fir and European beech; the bedrock is predominantly composed of mica-schist (muscovite gneiss) with quartzite intrusions. Understorey of both of the watersheds is dominated by Avenella flexuosa, Callamagrostis villosa, Vaccinium myrtillus, Athyrium distentifolium (SVOBODA et al, 2006). Soil types are mostly cambisols, podzols and litosols on steep slopes in the watersheds.…”

“…The mean over three investigated temperatures (5 • C, 10 • C and 15 • C) are given. The nutrient release was estimated form the vegetation cover at the Čertovo Lake and Plešné Lake watersheds (SVOBODA et al, 2006) 32. As a result, risk of N leakage to the lower soil horizons increases.…”

“…This fact moderates parameters of the canopy -tree composition (increase in spruce), (higher) tree density and, as assumed, even the age. Sites are probably impoverished of the nutrient content resulting in the poorer herb layer (Svoboda et al 2006b). …”

“…Details on land use history and forest composition of the watershed are given by VESELÝ et al (1993) and VESELÝ (1994) and details on the dominant understory vegetation are given by SVOBODA et al (2006). The bedrock is made up of mica-schist (muscovitic gneiss), quartzite, and small amounts of pegmatite (VESELÝ, 1994).…”
