-We examined the response of early growth of maritime pine seedlings to combined levels of light and phosphorus. Seedlings were grown under three levels of phosphorous availability, i.e., two relative addition rates (RAR = 2 and 4 g P (100 g -1 )P d -1 ) and a free-access to P, crossed with two light levels (photosynthetic photon flux densities of 150 and 450 µmol m -2 s -1 , respectively). Relative growth rate (RGR) and relative uptake rate of phosphorus (RUR) were computed, as well as the amount of light absorbed per seedling. We found that phosphorus and light acted as limiting factors with a complex interaction. Under low light and at the lowest P level, P and light were co-limiting, i.e., growth was enhanced only when P and light were increased together. Light was the limiting factor for growth under low light conditions at all other levels of P availability. P was the limiting factor at a RAR of 2% under high light. Enhancing P from 4% to free access did not significantly improve growth under high light. RUR was controlled systematically by P availability at 2 and 4% RAR. RGR values were close to RUR values except under free access to P. Therefore, growth-independent accumulation of P was observed under high P conditions. The differences in biomass production among P treatments were explained primarily by the reduced amount of radiation intercepted by the seedlings as a consequence of their reduced leaf area. No effect of P treatments were observed on the calculated radiation-use efficiency (RUE), which was found to be larger under low light. This confirms that pine seedlings adjust to moderate phosphorus deficiency mainly by changing their morphology (leaf area, dry-mass partitioning) while biochemical and photochemical limitations of photosynthesis play only a very secondary role.phosphorus nutrition / shade / growth / Pinus pinaster Aït.Résumé -Interaction des effets de la disponibilité en phosphore et en lumière sur la croissance de jeunes plants de pin maritime. La croissance de jeunes plants de pin maritime a été suivie en chambre de culture à deux niveaux d'éclairement et trois de disponibilité en phosphore. Deux taux d'addition relatifs en P (RAR = 2 et 4 g P (100 g -1 P j -1 ) et un libre accès au P ont été appliqués en combinaison avec deux niveaux d'éclairement (150 et 450 µmol m -2 s -1 ). Le taux de croissance relatif (RGR) et le taux d'absorption relatif de P (RUR) ont été calculés. La surface foliaire, la quantité de rayonnement absorbé et l'efficience d'utilisation du rayonnement (RUE) ont aussi été estimés. Les disponibilités en phosphore et en lumière ont limité la croissance suivant un schéma d'interaction complexe. Au plus faible niveau d'éclairement et d'ajout en phosphore, les deux facteurs étaient co-limitants et la croissance n'était augmentée que lorsque les deux facteurs augmentaient simultanément. SUMMARYBiomass yield is a function of the conversion efficiency of photosynthetically active radiation intercepted in photoassimilates and varies depending on the conditions in which a plant is grown. Thus, this study sought to quantify the conversion efficiency of solar radiation intercepted by photosynthetically active biomass (εb) in black wattle stands (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.). A study was therefore conducted in 1-7 year-old stands of the species in two sites (to span one plantation cycle), in which intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PARi), leaf area index, light extinction coefficient and biomass yield were determined. A system of equations is proposed, therefore, as photosynthetic radiation is intercepted and assimilates are converted, the system of equations estimates biomass yield, and at the same time predicts the biomass partition within the tree. The biomass yield of black wattle was linearly related to PARi and the εb of the total biomass of black wattle is 0.0021 kg MJ -1 .Key words: leaf area index, light extinction coefficient, photosynthetically active radiation, biomass compartments. RESUMENEl rendimiento en biomasa es una función de la eficiencia de conversión de radiación fotosintéticamente activa interceptada en fotoasimilados y varía, dependiendo de las condiciones en que se cultiva una planta. Este estudio cuantificó la eficiencia de conversión de la radiación solar interceptada por la biomasa fotosintéticamente activa (εb) en rodales acacia negra (Acacia mearnsii). Se realizó un estudio en rodales de 1-7 años de edad en dos sitios (para abarcar el ciclo completo de cultivo de la especie), en que se determinaron la radiación fotosintéticamente activa interceptada (PARI), el índice de área foliar, el coeficiente de extinción de la luz y el rendimiento de biomasa. Se propuso un sistema de ecuaciones que expresó como la radiación fotosintética es interceptada y los asimilados se convierten. El sistema de ecuaciones estima el rendimiento de biomasa y al mismo tiempo predice la partición de la biomasa dentro del árbol. El rendimiento en biomasa de acacia negra se relacionó linealmente con RFAi y la εb de la biomasa total de acacia negra fue 0,0021 kg MJ -1 .Palabras clave: índice de área foliar, coeficiente de extinción de la luz, radiación fotosintéticamente activa, compartimentos de la biomasa.

Model development at Temple, Texas, USA has a long history. Prior to the actual model development research, a hydrological data collection programme was established at Riesel, Texas (about 60 km northeast of Temple) in 1937. Data collected from the Riesel watersheds during 1937-2006 have been valuable in developing and testing models at Temple, as well as at other locations. Actual modelling research began in the mid-1960s with the development of single event models that served as building blocks for the comprehensive models of today. The focus of the early models was on surface water hydrology (rainfall excess, unit hydrographs and flood routing) and sediment yield. The models currently supported at Temple (ALMANAC, EPIC, APEX and SWAT) are continuous and operate on spatial scales ranging from individual fields to river basins. These models have been used worldwide in many projects dealing with soil and water resources and environmental management.
