Biomarkers for the acute respiratory distress syndrome: how to make the diagnosis more precise

Abstract: Abstract:The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is an acute inflammatory process of the lung caused by a direct or indirect insult to the alveolar-capillary membrane. Currently, ARDS is diagnosed based on a combination of clinical and physiological variables. The lack of a specific biomarker for ARDS is arguably one of the most important obstacles to progress in developing novel treatments for ARDS. In this article, we will review the current understanding of some appealing biomarkers that have been me… Show more

“…Containment and clinical management of MERS presents a complicated challenge due to multiple aspects including cultural, social and healthcare practice issues. During the SARS epidemic, the quick end of the outbreak was partially attributed to efficient quarantine and isolation methods, in addition to public awareness and information distribution to affected areas [41]. This included where to seek medical attention and protective measures individuals could take to protect themselves from infection, such as face masks.…”

“…Neither in adults nor in infants has the correlation between antithrombin and an organ failure of the gastrointestinal tract really been studied so far. No biomarkers have yet been confirmed for the diagnosis of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) or prediction of its prognosis ( Garcia-Laorden et al., 2017 ; Cartin-Ceba et al., 2015 ). There may be an association with decreased antithrombin levels and acute liver failure at least in adult patients with end-stage heart failure ( Hoefer et al., 2017 ).…”

“…CXCL8 and CCL20 belong to the C-X-C motif (CXCL) family and C-C motif (CC) family, respectively. CXCL8 has been considered as a potential biomarker for acute respiratory distress syndromes (García-Laorden et al, 2017). The up-regulation of the CXCL8 gene expression by SARS-CoV-1 is resulted from a direct effect of the virus at the cellular level (Spiegel and Weber, 2006).…”
