Ictal and interictal epileptic activity was recorded for the first time by multichannel magnetoencephalography (MEG) in three patients with partial epilepsy. Pre- and intra-operative localization of the epileptogenic region was compared. The interictal epileptic activity was localized at the same region of the temporal or frontal lobe as the ictal activity. Main zones of ictal activity were shown to evolve from the tissue at the centers of interictal activity. Pre- and intra-operative electrocorticography (ECoG) as well as postoperative outcome confirmed localization in the temporal and frontal lobe. Results also correlated with findings from scalp EEG, interictal and ictal single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Combined multichannel MEG/EEG recording permitted dipole localization of interictal and ictal activity.

The non-invasive measurement of the extremely weak magnetic fields generated by heart and brain is motivated by the possibility of obtaining quantitative diagnostic information about electric function. Magnetic signals (MCG, MEG) are significantly less influenced by body tissue than the corresponding electric signals (ECG, EEG). Measurement of biomagnetic signals is performed by superconducting sensors, consisting of pickup coils and SQUIDs (superconducting quantum interference device) operating in liquid Helium. For clinical investigations a biomagnetic multi-channel system (KRENIKONR) has been designed. It uses a flat array of 37 magnetic field sensors and is operated inside a shielded room. Evaluation of biomagnetic signals by use of simple source and body models and in combination with anatomical data from 3D MR- or CT-images yields sequences of locations of electrical function with a spatial resolution of some millimeters and a time resolution better than one millisecond. More than three years of clinical studies have demonstrated the value of the method primarily in cases with localized functional pathologies. In cardiology this is pathologies of the cardiac conductive pathway, ectopies, and arrhythmias. Validation has been performed by catheter stimulation in volunteers, and by catheter mapping and nuclear medical methods in patients. Extension of modelling and evaluation to cases with distributed activity, e.g. ventricular excitation, is under investigation.

BACKGOROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular disorders are increasing because of poor eating habits, excessive drinking, and lack of exercise. Some of the typical cardiovascular surgical procedures utilize catheters. Catheter-based procedures require the surgeons to have extensive experience and high proficiency at performing vascular interventions. However, the learning period to acquire such proficiency is lengthy and the opportunities for practical training and mastery are insufficient. Therefore, due to insufficient skill, dangerous situations with damage or rupture of the patient’s blood vessels may occur, thereby increasing the risk of medical accidents. Hence, it is necessary to have experience and proficiency for performing vascular interventions. Thus, it is necessary to develop a simulator to shorten learning time and reduce medical accidents. METHODS: In this study, we developed a position detection system for the simulator to use physical models to learn cardiovascular surgical intervention techniques. The developed system uses changes in the output values of a Hall sensor based on the position of a permanent magnet. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: From the changing output values, the distance calculation equation is derived, and the position of the permanent magnet is effectively estimated from the calculations. The performance of the position detecting system was tested, and the results proved that the system could be sufficiently used as a simulator.
