Biology of Trypanosoma cruzi: An update

Abstract: This research corroborated that these nosocomial infections are a relevant medical problem in our context. The most prevalent bacterial infections in the lower respiratory tract of ventilated patients were by Acinetobacter spp., Pseudomonas spp. and Klebsiella spp. The panel of antibiotics used as preventive therapy was not the solution of infections and probably induced drug-resistance mechanisms in these isolated microorganisms.

“…The size and shape of the reservosomes, glycosomes, and acidocalcisomes also differs between the two sizes of epimastigotes observed in Trypanosoma sp. AAT that is both cell cycle and nutrient dependent in other trypanosomes, especially T. brucei , which has been extensively studied [18, 19, 56, 68]. Put simply, due to the similarity in nutrient availability for the two epimastigotes observed in this study, differences in organelle structure is most likely cell-cycle dependent.…”

“…The kDNA is contained inside the kinetoplast pocket that is part of the single large mitochondrion [16, 17], which is unusual in both its structural and functional properties [18, 19]. The structure and size of Trypanosoma mitochondria are variable and cell cycle dependant.…”

Time-trend data pertaining to 741 mechanically ventilated patients with suspected nosocomial pneumonia were available between 2007 and 2010 for the 3 ICUs of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, Havana, Cuba [ 35 ]. The most prevalent bacterial infections were Acinetobacter spp.…”

“…The parasites are then accidentally rubbed into the bite wound or enter the host bloodstream through the mucosa. Further transmission routes include the ingestion of contaminated food, transmission by infected blood products and congenital transmission [1] , [2] . People who develop chronic Chagas disease face severe medical, social and also economic challenges as they are often vulnerable to superinfections and struggle with a limited ability to work [3] , [4] .…”
