Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is in the state of major threat for Nepal especially in maize although it has more than 80 host to continue its life cycle. After its first incidence in Africa in 2016, it has already spread in more than 100 countries within a short period of time. It was seen in India for the first time in 2018. Due to the open border between Nepal and India, there is high probability of incidence of pest in Nepal. The temperature regime of Nepal is highly suitable for the pest establishment. Now is the time to think about the pest which can cause severe damage to the second most produced cereal crop of Nepal i.e. maize. Management of the pest is possible through many biological, chemical and cultural means. Planting of legumes as a trap crop and ploughing field properly before planting the field can be a best possible cultural method of managing the pest. Natural enemies like Telenomus, Trichogramma chilotraeae for controlling the eggs, Bacillus thuringiensis for larvae and Brachymeria ovata for pupa of Fall Armyworm in Maize and Vegetables. Similarly, Neem extracts are found be larvicidal and the oil extracted from the seeds of long pepper are found to be checking Spermatogenesis of the pest. Chemicals like Methomyl, Cyfluthrin, Methyl parathion are used tocontrol the pest. Use of chemicals at the initiation of the pest spread is discouraged as it can hamper the natural enemy present in the surrounding ecology. However, the use of pesticides can be done below the economic threshold level so that the pest does not develop any resistance towards the chemicals.

Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a new pest in maize plants in Indonesia. This insect is originally from America and has spread to several countries causing yield losses. In the early 2019, this pests has attacked maize plants in the Sumatra region. This study aimed to know the presence of S. frugiperda in Bandung, Garut and Sumedang region. Surveys and observations were conducted in 14 subdistricts (6 subdistricts in Bandung, 6 subdistricts in Garut, and 2 subdistricts in Sumedang). The results showed that S. frugiperda has attacked maize plants in Bandung (Soreang), Garut (Leles, Banyuresmi, and Sucinaraja), and Sumedang (Jatinangor). Identification based on the typical morphological characters found in S. frugiperda larvae, such as the form of "Y" inverted on the head capsule and the patterns of black spots on the abdominal segments (square and trapezoidal forms). S. frugiperda larvae attacked plant growing points but the population was still low. The damage caused by S. frugiperda on maize was very similar to that caused by Mythimna separata, which was commonly found in the survey location of Bandung and Garut. Identification of novel approaches for managing the global pest, the Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is the need of the hour, as it defies many management strategies including synthetic chemicals, Bt transgenics, and so on. Recently CRISPR/Cas9‐based genome editing opened up newer avenues to design novel pest management strategies such as precision‐guided sterile insect technique (pgSIT). In this regard, genes governing sex determination, egg reproduction, and spermatogenesis could be the prime targets for genome editing. This requires validation of the target genes, preferably by a nontransgenic DNA‐free editing, before the final application. One such important gene regulating sex determination in Drosophila is the Sex lethal (Sxl). However, the function of Sxl is not highly conserved in other insects and, in particular, we are beginning to comprehend its role in Lepidoptera with only one reference available in Spodoptera litura till date. In the present study, we have edited the sxl gene of S. frugiperda through the delivery of ribonucleoprotein complex (sgRNA + Cas9) at G0 stage embryo, targeting the conserved region of all the documented five splice variants. Results clearly showed that editing of sxl gene impacted the overall fecundity and hatching rate. Therefore, Sxl could be one of the target genes for developing pgSIT approach for the management of S. frugiperda.
