For this experiment, duration and measurement of different stages of S. frugiperda viz., eggs, larva, pupa, adult and were studied. The life cycle of S. frugiperda revealed that the number of eggs laid by female was 327.4±55.09. As far as the hatching percent and the incubation period were concerned, 81.0±5.91 percent and 2.43±0.67 days were recorded. Mean period of larval instars i.e., first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth was 2.56±0.49, 2.30±0.46, 2.03±0.60, 2.00±0.58, 2.40±0.61, 4.63±0.66, respectively with a total larval period of 15.93±1.48 days. Pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition periods were 4.2±0.75, 3.6±0.49 and 4.4±0.80 days, respectively. The period of pupal stage was 9.37±0.91 days. Male and female adult longevity were 8.8±1.17 and 11.6±1.02 days, respectively. Total male and female adult life span were 37.6±1.36 and 40.4±1.62 days, respectively having 1:1.72 (Male: female) of sex ratio. The morphometric data viz., larval body length; pupal length and adult body length and wing span were measured.

Fall armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith) is a polyphagous pest, native to North and South America and is invasive in Eurasia and Africa. Life cycle and morphometric studies with the invasive population of FAW in Nepal were conducted under laboratory conditions in Chitwan, Nepal. Gravid females laid an average of 156.25 eggs per egg batch, with an average of 979.43 eggs during their whole lifetime. The average pre-oviposition period was 3.75 days, oviposition period was 3 days, the larval developmental period was 16.31 days, the pupal period was 9.69 days, and the whole life cycle (egg to egg) averaged 33 days. The average length of each instar larva from I to VI instars was 1.5, 3.6, 7.1, 11.6, 18.5, and 34.4 mm, respectively. Head capsule widths for each instar were 0.35, 0.47, 0.8, 1.37, 2.11, and 2.7 mm, respectively for instars first through sixth. Pupal and adult emergence rates were 98.9 and 97.2%, respectively, with a male to female ratio of 1:1.3. Larval mortalities of the I, II, and III instars were 70, 66, and 12%, with no mortality in the IV, V and VI instars. Adult longevity was 20.73 days for males and 22.78 days for females. Pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella is considered as the most injurious insect-pest of cotton causing significant yield losses in the world including Pakistan. The ability of pink bollworms to enter in diapauses before the onset of harsh condition increases the survival rate to greater extent and determine to attain the status of major insect-pest. The present investigations were conducted under laboratory conditions set as 26+2 oC, 65+5% and 15:9 (L/D) temperature, relative humidity, photoperiod respectively. Change in temperature to varied extent and episodes of photoperiod for specific intervals were the key variables to study their influence on diapausing ability in pink bollworms. The results elaborated that the temperature of 14 oC found to be optimum for diapause induction as maximum (68.21±1.83%) larvae of pink bollworms at 4th instar were in diapause state. While the temperature of 26 oC found to be lethal regarding diapause induction of 0.00, 3.11±1.03 and 21.96±0.13% when 4th instar larvae were held for one, four and seven days respectively. Influence of photoperiod revealed that the highest diapause (28.01±0.20%) was induced when episode of 07:17 (L/D) photo phase was maintained for a period of seven days. Peak adult emergence (92.13±3.74%) was recorded at 26 oC, 15:9 L/D of temperature and photoperiod respectively. However, maximum adult mortality (31.66±4.59%) was found at 14 oC when the pupae were held for 14 days. These findings lead to the conclusion that the temperature and photoperiod are the key determinants among the abiotic variable, which govern diapausing phenomena in pink bollworm.
