Life cycle and morphometrics of fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) (Lepidoptera: noctuidae) on maize crop

Abstract: Fall armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith) is a polyphagous pest, native to North and South America and is invasive in Eurasia and Africa. Life cycle and morphometric studies with the invasive population of FAW in Nepal were conducted under laboratory conditions in Chitwan, Nepal. Gravid females laid an average of 156.25 eggs per egg batch, with an average of 979.43 eggs during their whole lifetime. The average pre-oviposition period was 3.75 days, oviposition period was 3 days, the larval developm… Show more

It was recorded that female was long lived as compared to male, while some researchers (Sharma et al, 2022; ) had reported that male was long lived as compared to female (Table 2). This difference may be due to geographical variations.…”

“…Spodoptera frugiperda larvae consist of 6 instars [12].The size of larvae in instar 1 is 1.67mm, instar 2 larvae are 6.57mm, instar 3 larvae is 11.96 mm, instar 4 larvae is 17.45mm, instar 5 larvae is 20.26mm, instar 6 larvae is 21.99 mm [13] [14]. hen compared to previous studies, S. frugiperda larvae fed with soybean feed have a smaller size when compared to previous studies with corn feed which is the main host [15].…”
