Biology, Ecology and Aquaculture potential of Osteochilus spilurus (Bleeker 1851) in East Belitung, Indonesia

Abstract: Osteochilus spilurus is one of the freshwater fish species in the Cyprinidae family which is found in the ancient river region of Sunda shelf which empties toward the North Natuna Sea. This article explores the biological, ecological, and potential characteristics of fish called Cempedik (local name in Belitung Island) as an aquaculture species. Research results and literature showed about feeding habits, reproduction, habitat, and aquaculture potential. It is abundant and well suited for culture in an establi… Show more

“…The harvesting of fish may impact the mating mechanism (Avise and Ayala, 2009). Most O. spilurus are captured in gonad-ripe conditions on Belitung Island (Rizkika, 2017; Kurniawan et al, 2020). Rather than phenotypic plasticity or environmental variation, phenotypic variations in harvested populations are due to evolution (Avise and Ayala, 2009).…”

“…These species' distribution is widely on a river in Sumatera, Bangka Belitung Archipelago, Malay Peninsular, dan Kalimantan (Roberts, 1989;Hui and Kottelat, 2009;Esa et al, 2012;Fahmi et al, 2015;Kurniawan et al, 2020). They do not have a common name and trade name but have various Indonesian names such as Cempedik, Kepaet, Bantak Batu, Aro, Buruk Perut, and Seluang.…”

“…Journal of Aquatropica Asia 7(1): 43-48 -44 - (Kurniawan et al, 2022).

“…The fishing season that occurs in the rainy season has the potential to disrupt the reproductive cycle of fish because the majority of fish caught are gonadally mature. More than half of the fish caught are at level 4 maturity [4]. Efforts to domesticate this species have been made.…”
