SummaryThe parasites of the genus Spirometra belong to one of the twelve genera of the family Diphyllobothriidae, with several species of zoonotic importance whose defi nitive hosts are carnivorous mammals. In Argentina, few reports have described these parasites in wild carnivores. Morphological studies of the adult stage obtained from necropsy allow the distinction between Diphyllobothrium and Spirometra. A less invasive method of identifi cation is the analysis of the parasite eggs; however, the morphometric similarities between close genera and species and alterations in egg preservation affect the identifi cation. In Argentina, molecular tools have been used as a non-invasive and accurate method to increase the information about Spirometra and to improve its identifi cation. In the present study, DNA was extracted from Spirometra eggs from Pampas foxes and a 450-bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene was sequenced. The sequence obtained, which is the fi rst Spirometra DNA sequence from Argentina, was deposited at GenBank. Comparison by BLASTN analysis between the sequence obtained and the sequences from GenBank showed 93 % identity with S. proliferum and 89% with S. erinaceieuropaei.

IzvlečekŽelve so pogosti hišni ljubljenčki in znan rezervoar okužb s salmonelami. V literaturi se opisuje predvsem prenos okužb z uživanjem slabo toplotno obdelanega želvjega mesa, obstajajo pa tudi posamezni opisi prenosa okužbe z želve kot hišnega ljubljenčka in vode, v kateri so bivale želve. V našem prispevku predstavljamo primera dveh bolnic, hospitaliziranih zaradi akutnega gastroenterokolitisa ob okužbi s Salmonella-o Chester, preneseno iz vode, v kateri sta bivali želvi rumenovratki, in epidemiološko poročilo o dogodkih, povezanih z okužbo. AbstractTurtles are common as pets and represent a known reservoir for salmonellosis. There are few epidemic outbreaks of salmonellosis linked to ingestion of undercooked turtle meat described in the literature. A few cases of pet turtle borne infection and infection due to aquarium water contamination have been described. We present cases of two female patients hospitalized due to acute gastroenterocolitis caused by Salmonella Chester and the epidemiological report of events related to the infection outbreak. The infection was transmitted from the water of a private aquarium with two pet turtles.

Thirteen species of reptiles are recorded from the Hall Islands, all but two sea turtles for the first time. None of the 11 species of lizards (six geckos, five skinks) is endemic, and most are widely distributed throughout Micronesia and often well beyond. Emoia boettgeri has the most limited range, which extends from Chuuk State in the central Caroline Islands eastward to the Marshall Islands. Emoia caeruleocauda is the most common skink, and Lepidodactylus lugubris is the most common gecko. The apparent absence of other common Micronesian species, such as Nactus pelagicus, Emoia cyanura, E. impar, and Lipinia noctua is unexpected and possibly an artifact of limited sampling. A recent incident of turtle poisoning (chelonitoxism) attributed to the consumption of hawksbill turtle, Eretmochelys imbricata, resulted in the death of six Murilo Atoll islanders and sickened many others.
