Biological parameters of the burrowing crayfish, Parastacus pugnax (Poeppig, 1835), in Tiuquilemu, Bio Bio Region, Chile

Abstract: ABSTRACT. In order to determine the biological parameters of the burrowing crayfish (Parastacus pugnax), we fenced in 900 m 2 of a humid, low-lying sector in Tiuquilemu, Bío-Bío Region, Chile. Monthly samples were taken from August 2007 to August 2008, and 3,512 specimens were caught. Records were made of their carapace length (CL), total weight (TW), sex, and number of eggs (for females). The monthly size-structures showed few juveniles between 20 and 30 mm CL in nearly all months. P. pugnax was found to carr… Show more

“…In general, while the body weight of the male individuals of crayfish is greater, and their walking legs and their cheliped wider and longer, the females have a wider and longer abdomen (Romaire et al, 1977;Rhodes and Holdich, 1979;Harlıoğlu and Güner, 2006;Ibarra and Arana, 2012). It has been found in most of the studies done on A. leptodactylus in Turkey that due to the size of their walking legs and their weight, male individuals have a greater average length and weight compared to female individuals (Erdemli, 1982;Balık et al, 2005;Büyükçapar et al, 2006;Güner, 2006).…”

“…brasiliensis and ~3512 of P . pugnax were sampled over 1 year using a mark–recapture method (Fontoura and Buckup, ; Ibarra and Arana, ) ((Table S1), and a direct capture method was used to estimate a population of ~766 individuals of P . defossus captured over 18 months (Noro and Buckup, ).…”

“…One of them, Parastacus pugnax (Poeppig, 1835), is widespread in fl ooding plains called "vegas", streaching between 32-38° S (Rudolph, 2013 a, b;Velásquez et al, 2022) and forest wetlands at 38° S (Correa-Araneda et al, 2021, 2017. Th is species is the most studied and important as it is used for food in rural communities between 34-38°S regardless of seasonal change (Rudolph, 2013 b;Ibarra & Arana, 2012, 2011.…”
