Biological functions of microRNAs: a review

Abstract: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a recently discovered family of endogenous, noncoding RNA molecules approximately 22 nt in length. miRNAs modulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to complementary sequences in the coding or 3' untranslated region of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs). It is now clear that the biogenesis and function of miRNAs are related to the molecular mechanisms of various clinical diseases, and that they can potentially regulate every aspect of cellular activity, including differentiati… Show more

“…Pre-miRNA is an intermediate during miRNA biogenesis and how pre-miRNAs are processed by the Dicer complex determines the characteristics of mature miRNA (Huang et al, 2011). Previous research on pre-miRNA and mature miRNA suggested a positive correlation between the expression of pre-miRNAs and their corresponding mature miRNAs, but the regulation mechanism of pre-miRNA and mature miRNA are different (Gan et al, 2013;Schmittgen et al, 2004).…”

“…Recently, ribonucleic acid (RNA) has been studied to elucidate the function of cells [1,2] and it has been applied in biosensors [3,4] and targeting therapies [5,6]. For such studies, the extraction and purification of RNA from cells is required.…”

“…It has several features that allow improved adsorption characteristics: (1) it has a high specific surface area and a large pore volume [10,11]; (2) its surface functional groups are easily changed using silica sources containing different functional groups [12,13]; and (3) its pore size, particle size, and particle morphology can be controlled by synthesis condition [14]. For example, Fan et al investigated lysozyme adsorption on MPS materials that had different particle morphologies (i.e.…”

“…12 Primarily, miRNAs function as crucial factors in diverse regulation pathways, 13 including tumorigenesis, cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Accumulating evidence indicates that miRNAs can act in human carcinogenesis as novel types of tumor suppressors or oncogenes.…”
