This paper summarizes the results of a study that comprised a survey along with a morphological characterization of Artemia populations from seven sebkhas, one chott, and an inland salt lake in Algeria. Sebkhas and chotts are two different types of closed inland basins. Morphological characters together with a multivariate discriminant analysis applied to morphometric data obtained from adult specimens cultured under standard conditions, were used to differentiate the species and strains. The bisexual species A. salina (L., 1758) is present in seven of these saltmarshes, but frequently cooccurs with diploid and tetraploid parthenogenetic strains. The biodiversity pattern of the populations of Artemia in Algeria appears to be similar to that found in the rest of the western Mediterranean region. RÉSUMÉLe présent article résume les résultats d'une étude sur la localisation et la caractérisation morphologique des populations d'Artemia présentes dans sept sebkhas, un chott et un lac salé en Algérie. Sebkhas et chotts sont deux types différents de bassins fermés d'eaux intérieures. Les caractères morphologiques associés à une analyse discriminante multivariée appliquée aux paramètres morphométriques obtenus à partir d'individus adultes élevés en conditions standardisées ont permis de différencier les espèces et les souches. L'espèce bisexuelle A. salina (L., 1758) a été trouvée dans sept de ces milieux salés, mais fréquemment en présence de souches parthénogénétiques diploïdes et tétraploïdes. Le modèle de diversité biologique des populations d'Artemia d'Algérie est similaire à celui trouvé dans le reste de la Méditerranée occidentale.

The large branchiopod fauna of Sardinia is reviewed based both on literature and newly collected data. Based on the available evidence, 13 taxa are present on the island (8 Anostraca, 2 Notostraca, and 3 Spinicaudata). Among them, the finding of the spinicaudatan Leptestheria dahalacensis is new for Sardinia, while the spinicaudatans Cyzicus bucheti and Eulimnadia sp. were overlooked in the most recent synopses on the fauna of the island due to misidentifications. Conversely, Cyzicus tetracerus and Limnadia lenticularis, previously erroneously reported based on misidentifications, must be excluded from the fauna of Sardinia. The finding of Eulimnadia sp. is the first record in Europe and the northernmost record of the genus. The occurrence of Leptestheria dahalacensis in Sardinia is rather unexpected and probably due to its accidental introduction linked with rice cultures. At least four of the 13 Sardinian large branchiopod species are absent from the Italian mainland and Sicily, stressing the uniqueness of its fauna and its significant contribution to the Mediterranean inland water crustacean diversity.

To appraise the current knowledge of Sicilian transitional waters (TWs), a review was undertaken of the information available on these ecosystems. In detail, a synthesis of the current status is reported, highlighting for each area the ecological features and status, historical data, conservation regime, environmental emergencies and anthropic pressures to which they are subject. The Sicilian TWs reviewed include coastal ponds and lakes, mires and areas with active and nonactive saltworks. Almost all of these ecosystems are affected by several protection regimes because of their high naturalistic value, although current knowledge is limited and fragmented. A few areas have received more attention from the scientific community, whereas others are consistently less studied. The overall picture is one of high heterogeneity in terms of origin, typology, surface, animal and vegetal communities, marine and freshwater exchanges, anthropic pressure and intended use.
