Biological control of Phytophthora blight in red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) using Bacillus subtilis

Abstract: Phytophthora blight is one of the most important devastating diseases of red pepper plants. Forty-one bacterial isolates were obtained from rhizosphere soil and subsequently tested for antagonistic activity under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Among the 41 isolates tested, 12 exhibited a maximum antagonistic activity in dual culture assay. These 12 isolates were further screened for disease suppression on red pepper plants in both natural and greenhouse conditions. All the antagonists showed varying levels o… Show more

“…These results suggest the exertion of different modes of action and production of various types of antifungal metabolites by the isolates (Lee et al 2008). Furthermore, an effective biocontrol agent mostly suppresses a pathogen not only by adopting a single mechanism but also by using a combination of more than one mode of actions (Alabouvette et al 1993).…”

“…In the research PDA medium was used, so competition might be excluded as a mode of action for the antifungal isolates according to Lee et al [37]. In the research, the inhibition of the R. solani growth by the antagonistic bacteria occurred at 48 h probably due to the late production of antifungal metabolites.…”
