Biological activities of extracts from endophytic fungi isolated fromGarciniaplants

Abstract: Sixty-five crude extracts from 51 selected endophytic fungi isolated from Garcinia species were tested for various bioactivities. Eighty per cent of the fungal extracts from fermentation broths and mycelia displayed bioactivities: antimycobacterial (76.9%), antimalarial (14.1%), antiviral (16.7%), antioxidant (22.2%), antiproliferation (11.1% against NCI-H187 and 12.7% against KB cells), and cytotoxicity to Vero cells (40.0%). Based on internal transcribed spacer rRNA sequence analysis, 15 bioactive isolates w… Show more

“…The antioxidant activity of observed methanol extract in S. jambos and E. deglupta was nearly the same, compared to ascorbic acid (3.94 µg/mL). The antioxidant activity with an IC 50 value of <10 µg/ml could be considered as a good antioxidant and an IC 50 value of 10-50 µg/ml could be considered as a powerful antioxidant [14].…”

“…A sample of 1.0 g was applied to the skin surface. Then, at several time intervals (2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20, and 24 h) samples (3.0 mL) was taken from receptor compartment using a syringe and receptor compartment was refilled with the same amount of phosphate buffer pH 5.5. Next, the sample was inserted into the vial and its concentration measured by TLC-densitometry.…”

“…For example, Strobel et al (2002) and Harper et al (2003) obtained two antioxidants, pestacin and isopestacin, from the endophytic fungi Pestalotiopsis microspora. Phongpaichit et al (2007) reported that 22.5% of the extracts from endophytic fungi and garcinia plants exhibited remarkable antioxidant activities. Recently, the endophytic fungi residing in Nerium oleander L. were shown to have excellent antioxidant capacity (with a TEAC value ranging from 9.59 to 150.79 μmol TE/100 mL culture in the ABTS assay) .…”
