Biologic properties of mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow and adipose tissue

Abstract: The biologic characteristics of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from two distinct tissues, bone marrow and adipose tissue were evaluated in these studies. MSCs derived from human and non-human primate (rhesus monkey) tissue sources were compared. The data indicate that MSCs isolated from rhesus bone marrow (rBMSCs) and human adipose tissue (hASCs) had more similar biologic properties than MSCs of rhesus adipose tissue (rASCs) and human bone marrow MSCs (hBMSCs). Analyses of in vitro growth kinetics reve… Show more

“…(2) Several adult (tissue-specific) stem cells appear to be suitable for clinical applications. For example, bone marrow-derived (3,4) or adipose tissue-derived (5,6) stromal (mesenchymal) stem cells (MSCs) or muscle-derived satellite cells (7,8) are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate, under proper ex vivo culture conditions, into osteoblasts, adipocytes, chondrocytes, or myocytes. (7,9) In addition, preliminary proof-of-concept studies suggest functional improvement of the affected organ after cell transplantation.…”

“…Although bone marrow remains the main source for MSCs, much attention has been given recently to adipose tissue due to its abundance, simple accessibility, and the practicability of harvesting by modern liposuction procedures (Izadpanah et al 2006). Large amounts of cells indeed can be isolated from either liposuction aspirates or excised fat, approximately 5000 cells/g of adipose tissue, compared to 100-1000 cells/mL of marrow (Strem et al 2005;Zhu et al 2008).…”
