Large pelagic fish live on the water surface in groups. Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), mackerel tuna (Euthynnus affinis), mackerel (Scomberomous guttatus) are species of fishes that mainly catches by fishermen using purse seines. This study aims to determine the length and weight of large pelagic fish in the water of Idi Rayeuk and best the fishing season. This research was conducted in one month. Fish samples were collected from fishermen that used purse seine and landed their catches at the Idi Rayeuk Fishing Port, East Aceh. Additionally, the data was derived from the fishing port time-series during 2015 to 2019. The result showed that the yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) has a length between 37 - 58 cm with a weight of 1.0 - 3.2 kg, skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) 32 - 58 cm in length and weight 0.5 - 3.0 kg, mackerel tuna has 33 - 54 cm of length with a weight of 0.6 - 2.5 kg, and mackerel has 44 - 66 cm of length and weighing 0.7 - 1.7 kg. Its also found that the peak season for catching yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and mackerel tuna is May and June, and the lowest season in December for the yellowfin tuna, and December and January for the mackerel tuna. The peak season for skipjack fishing occurs in May, August, and October, and the low season occurs in November and December. Kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) is one of the highly favored mackerel tunas caught in Java Sea. The increase in demand due to local consumption and export eventually increases fishing that is proportional to the exploitation status. To maintain the fish resource, a scientific study should be carried out on the fishing grounds and the exploitation status of kawakawa. This study was carried out for 3 years, i.e. in March to October 2017, June to December 2018, and February to November 2019 at Pekalongan National Fishing Port in Pekalongan, Central Java, with 9,511 fish as the study objects. The data analysis was carried out by observing the fishing grounds using GPS and through interview. In addition, the exploitation status was analyzed using FISAT II application and ELEFAN program. The fishing grounds were mostly coastal waters with 15–55 cm sized kawakawa. The size of the first caught (Lc) of the kawakawa in this area ranged from 26.9 cm to 38.4 cm. The fish recruitment occurred all year long, peaking in Apr at 15.97% and Juli 13.62%.The fish natural mortality (M) was smaller than its fishing mortality (F), while its exploitation status was 0.66 (overfished), meaning that the current fishing efforts should be reduced by 32%. The other management efforts that can be carried out are among others conservation, keeping the fishing grounds outside the spawning grounds, and controlling the mesh size.

Comparison of handline tuna catches in Indian Ocean and Banda Sea waters

There are two essential landing sites for handline tuna in Indonesia: Palabuhanratu (in the Indian Ocean) and Kendari (in the Banda Sea). This paper analyzes handline catches from the Indian Ocean and Banda Sea waters as the main fishing ground. The catch composition of the handline tuna landed in Kendari is more varied than Palabuhanratu. Several species commonly caught are yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis), bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) as a target species, and some billfish species as bycatch. Mean CPUE for handline tuna landed in Palabuhanratu is lower than Kendari. A significant difference is based on the monthly mean CPUE variation between Palabuhanratu and Kendari landing sites (p < 0.001). Handline catches in Palabuhanratu had a more comprehensive range of length sizes than Kendari, using a two-sample K-S test showed significant differences (p < 0.001). The fish size landed in Kendari is relatively smaller than Palabuhanratu. The average length of fish caught by handline is smaller than the length at first maturity (Lm) value in both landing sites. The use of large size hook for hand lines is recommended for catching tunas in this area.
