Bioinspired Antimicrobial Coatings from Peptide-Functionalized Liquid Crystalline Nanostructures

Abstract: Surface-associated microbial infections and contaminations are a major challenge in various fields including the food and health sectors. This study demonstrates the design of antimicrobial coatings based on the self-assembly of the food-grade amphiphilic lipid glycerol monooleate with the human cathelicidin-derived antimicrobial peptide LL-37. Structural properties of the coating and their alterations with composition were studied using advanced experimental methods including synchrotron grazing-incidence sma… Show more

“…[ 9a ] Further, these lipid–AMP complexes exhibited much higher antibacterial activity against gram‐negative bacteria strains, which contain lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on their surface, than gram‐positive strains, where LPS is absent. [ 9b,11 ] Hence, the encapsulation of LL‐37 into lipid nanocarriers appears to modify the interaction with the LPS on the outer membrane of the gram‐negative bacteria.…”

“…SA is a well‐known anti‐bacterial agent with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 250–500 µg mL −1 (1.81–3.6 × 10 × 10 −3 m ) against S. aureus . [ 47 ] The SA containing surface of Pda + SA ester fabricated in this work inhibited the growth of S. aureus in a touch assay [ 48 ] ( Figure A). Quantitative analysis of the antibacterial activity revealed that Pda+ SA ester coating completely eliminated bacterial growth, whereas the control samples of uncoated glass and Pda + glass led to approximately 941 ± 634 and 2222 ± 1464 CFU mL −1 , respectively (Figure 3B).…”

“…Although GISAXS has not been applied for the characterization of peptide-SAMs, it was recently used to evaluate the structural properties of a lipid/AMP self-assembled layer on silicon substrate, based on different ratios of the glycerol monooleate (lipid) and the LL-37 AMP. 212…”
