Biofiltration of Air: A Review

Abstract: In this paper we present a review of the existing air pollution control technologies (APCT), when used essentially for the elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOC). The biotechnologies referred to, bioscrubbers, biotrickling filters and biofilters, are also described. A more detailed review of biofiltration is proposed, presenting the most recent and latest developments achieved in the field of bioprocessing. In particular, the influence of the filter bed, the polluted air flowrates, the pollutants, the… Show more

“…In most cases, some conventional physical technologies are often unsatisfactory due to organic pollutants only being transferred from gaseous to other phases, and still not being fully destroyed; while chemical technologies are always expensive [11]. However, biological process has been found to be a very promising technology for the removal of odorous or toxic volatile organic compound waste gas because of low operating costs, low energy requirements as well as no by-products produced for further treatment or disposal [12,13]. For instance, no other by-product was detected except CO 2 , H 2 O and H 2 SO 4 in the acidophilic bacteria oxidizing CS 2 or mixtures of CS 2 and H 2 S system [14].…”
