Biofilms and microbially influenced cuprosolvency in domestic copper plumbing systems

Abstract: Aims: To survey bio®lm accumulation within domestic copper plumbing pipes in South Australian drinking water distribution systems and examine its role in copper solvation (cuprosolvency). Methods and Results: Cold water copper pipes were sampled from two different plumbing systems receiving ®ltered and un®ltered potable water respectively. Biomass was quanti®ed by total organic carbon measurements and viable cell counts and microbial activity by respirometry. Bio®lm accumulation was related to water chemistry … Show more

“…Although providing efficient biofilm kill and removal, neither Grotanat Flussig nor Grotanat Bohrerbad is currently approved or marketed for use in DUWS. These products would require further evaluation, for example, in terms of materials compatibility and copper solvation (cuprosolvency) before they could be recommended for routine use in DUWS (9). Particular parameters may have to be addressed with respect to the compatibility of DUWS construction materials with any proposed agent.…”

“…For example, the brass components that are used as connectors in DUWS may be incompatible with some disinfectants. The pH of the water can be critical to the cuprosolvency of brass fittings (9).…”

“…It is known that microorganisms may influence corrosion of plumbing materials (Critchley et al 2001;Beech et al 2005;Pavissich et al 2010). Water chemistry was used to characterize basic water properties for all tested systems.…”
