Bioethanol used as topical antiseptics: Pretreatment optimization of bioethanol production from tobacco industrial waste

Indonesian villages are facing dangerous condition. Every year, young people are deserting the villages. To overcome this problem, Tangsi Jaya hamlet, West Java, has been provided with 18 kW micro-hydro to supply electricity both to the community and to Small Processing Center for ground coffee production. Results of cash flow analysis for ground coffee in Tangsi Jaya hamlet, with total investment of IDR 110 750 000 and discount rate of 18 % for 5 yr. Banyumeneng I hamlet, Yogyakarta with an investment cost IDR 95 000 000 and production cost of IDR 34 195 000 yr–1 and the interest rate of 14 % yr–1, the payback period was estimated to be 3 yr with ROI of 40 %. PEST analysics indicate that the higher electricity tariff and interest rate while the higher the value of technology and number of people involve with the SPC will result in the bigger value of ROI. Renewable energy technology could be used for value added activities in rural areas, create small industries, provide job opportunities to the local people and create conditions for sustainable economic development. For sustainable bioethanol production, the investigation of novel fermentative microorganisms and feedstocks is crucial. In this context, the goals of the current study are suggesting pumpkin residues as new raw material for bioethanol production and investigating the fermentative capacity of the Candida boidinii, which is a newly isolated yeast from sugar factory wastes. Response surface methodology was used to determine the effect of enzyme (cellulase and hemicellulase) concentration and enzymatic hydrolysis time. The maximum bioethanol concentration was 29.19 g/L when fermentation parameters were optimized. However, it is revealed that enzymatic hydrolysis and hydrolysis duration (48-72 h) have significant effects on reducing sugar concentration. The highest reducing sugar was 108.86 g/L when the 20% initial pumpkin residue was hydrolyzed at 37.5 FPU/g substrate cellulase and 37.5 U/mL hemicellulase at the end of 72 h. Under these optimized conditions, the bioethanol production of C. boidinii increased by 22.91% and reached 35.88 g/L. This study shows pumpkin residues are promising feedstocks and C. boidinii is a suitable microorganism for efficient bioethanol production.

The development of biofuel in Indonesia is rife to reduce the consumption of fuel oil. Bioethanol has advantages compared to fuel oil, such as lower carbon monoxide emissions making it environmentally friendly. Besides that, from being used as a fuel, bioethanol is used as raw material for alcohol, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics derivatives. Biomass is one of the bioethanol’s raw materials available in Indonesia, one of which is tobacco stem. In this research, the tobacco stem hydrolysis process carried out using the ultrasonic-assisted hydrolysis method. The variable of the hydrolysis process is H2SO4 solution, particle size, and time. The data analysis used Design Expert with a Central Composite Design method. The purpose of this research was to determine the optimum of particle size, H2SO4 concentration, and the time in the hydrolysis process of tobacco stems with the ultrasonic-assisted hydrolysis method. The optimum resulting in reducing sugar of ultrasonic-assisted hydrolysis is 6.921 µg/µL.
