Bioenergetic and Antioxidant Properties of Coenzyme Q10: Recent Developments

Abstract: For a number of years, coenzyme Q (CoQ10 in humans) was known for its key role in mitochondrial bioenergetics; later studies demonstrated its presence in other subcellular fractions and in plasma, and extensively investigated its antioxidant role. These two functions constitute the basis on which research supporting the clinical use of CoQ10 is founded. Also at the inner mitochondrial membrane level, coenzyme Q is recognized as an obligatory co-factor for the function of uncoupling proteins and a modulator of … Show more

“…Conversely, Littarru and Tiano [29] observed that supplementation with CoQ10 resulted in increased levels of ubiquinol-10 within the circulating lipoproteins and increased resistance of human low-density lipoproteins to the initiation of lipid peroxidation, which could reduce oxidative stress.…”

“…This molecule participates in aerobic cellular respiration as an electron carrier for generating energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate in vivo [7]. In addition, CoQ10 has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant and regulator of vasoactive mechanisms in multiple studies on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and renal diseases [8][9][10].…”

“…Due to their role in reducing the damaging effects of the highly reactive free radicals, coenzyme Q-based antioxidants are seen as indispensible systems that protect the occurrence of many physiological processes in all living organisms. The potential of acting of various coenzyme Q antioxidants toward different targets (reactive oxygen species ROS) is described in several review works and books [20,[47][48][49][50][51][52][53]. Indeed, the antioxidant potential of all coenzyme Qs depends significantly on the nature of the substituents existing in their structural pattern [2,9,33].…”
