Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) being an emerging technology have been the research focus of increasing interest due to their sustainable capacity for wastewater treatment together with electricity generation. This study investigated the potential use of pure culture Bacillus cereus and Clostridium butyricum as inoculums in MFCs for simultaneous bioelectricity generation and treatment of petroleum refinery effluent. Double-chambered MFCs was used for the study and operated over four-batch cycles for 30 cumulative days but with different external resistances. The influent concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic compound (TOC) in the petroleum refinery effluent was 970 mg/l (ppm) and 156 g/l, respectively. Experimental results indicated that the MFCs with the use of Bacillus cereus as biocatalyst achieved its maximum COD removal, TOC degradation and coulombic efficiencies of 70%, 88.7% and 19.21%, respectively; while with the use of Clostridium butyricum, it achieved the highest COD removal, TOC degradation and coulombic efficiencies of 54.2%, 68.7% and 17.84%, respectively. A maximum voltage of 450 mV and highest power density of 17066.67 mW/m 2 with a maximum current density of 1.270 mA/m 2 was obtained in regard to the external resistor of 1000 Ω using Bacillus cereus as biocatalyst. Similarly, using Clostridium butyricum as biocatalyst the maximum voltage of 370 mV and highest power density of 8816.17mW/m 2 with a maximum current density of 0.913 mA/m 2 was achieved. The study demonstrated that both Bacillus cereus and Clostridium butyricum has strong potentials to be used as inoculums for simultaneous bioelectricity generation and treatment of petroleum refinery effluent in MFCs.

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a novel technology that can be used for electricity generation during oxidization of the organic substances presented in the substrate. To obtain a desirable performance, it is essential to understand the influential factors on the MFC. Among the numerous factors affecting the MFC performance, substrate, microorganisms and their metabolism, electron transfer mechanism in an anodic chamber, electrodes material and the shape of electrodes, type of membrane, operating conditions such as temperature, pH and salinity, electron acceptor in a cathodic chamber and geometric design of the MFC are considered as the most important factors. Among different substrates, wastewater is a sustainable rich medium which can be treated by MFCs. There are various types of exoelectrogenic bacteria presented in wastewaters which can oxidize organic matter and transfer electrons to the anode without using mediators. Like other microbial systems, optimum pH and temperature enhance the bacterial growth which can improve the MFC performance. Despite the negative effect of salt on microbial growth, higher salinity and ionic strength can increase the conductivity of substrate and therefore enhance MFC performance. Scaling up MFC is a controversial issue which needs a comprehensive understanding of these factors. By using new inexpensive materials for electrodes and membrane for manufacturing MFCs, a more cost-effective design for scalable wastewater treatment and high power generation can be achieved. Furthermore, MFC is a suitable candidate for bioremediation of contaminated groundwater. These factors and their impact on the MFC performance have been reviewed in the present survey.

Summary In this study, sewage was simultaneously treated and used to produce electricity using a two‐chambered microbial fuel cell (MFC) with carbon cloth electrodes having platinum coating on the cathode. Porous carbon electrodes are found to be the more suitable for MFCs as the power generation value is high when compared with nonporous surfaces and has a significant impact on the development of stable biofilms on the anode. Wastewater having an initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 830 ± 20 mg/L had a removal efficiency from the MFC of around 78%. The initial pH of sewage in the range of 7.69 ± 0.2 saw a shift towards neutral (around 7.4) and biochemical oxygen demand ranging from 300 ± 20 mg/L in the system decreased up to 175 ± 15 mg/L. The cell open circuit voltage peaked at 800 mV. Current and power density was calculated using an external resistance (of 250 Ω) followed by normalizing to the anode surface area. This bioelectricity generation is attributed to the decomposition of the organic matter and is reported to peak at 0.54 mA/m2 and 204 ± 0.38 mW/m2, respectively. Power generation has faster COD removal rates with external resistors compared with open circuit analysis, and MFCs can be effective to support the wastewater treatment infrastructure while at the same time generate electrical power as a value added product.
