Biodiversity conservation in agriculture requires a multi-scale approach

Abstract: Biodiversity loss-one of the most prominent forms of modern environmental change-has been heavily driven by terrestrial habitat loss and, in particular, the spread and intensification of agriculture. Expanding agricultural land-use has led to the search for strong conservation strategies, with some suggesting that biodiversity conservation in agriculture is best maximized by reducing local management intensity, such as fertilizer and pesticide application. Others highlight the importance of landscape-level app… Show more

“…Aggregate food production from intensification has undoubtedly increased, reducing the pressure of agricultural land expansion into natural habitats to meet the growing food demand (7). However, there are numerous unintended consequences of agricultural intensification for biodiversity (8)(9)(10), water quality, and other ecosystem services (5,11).…”

“…Interactions between local and landscape conservation strategies are important but can affect different taxonomic groups in different ways, implying that other mechanisms such as dispersal ability, range size, or response to disturbance are also important , Batáry et al 2012, Gonthier et al 2014. Both local and landscape factors may also have significant effects on biological control in agricultural areas (Schmidt et al 2004).…”

“…fire, feral horses, climate change) threaten biodiversity values. It is also in line with ecological critiques that biodiversity institutions are too focused on protecting endangered species, and better biodiversity outcomes could be achieved by adopting larger--scaled approaches (Pasari et al 2013;Gonthier et al 2014). • Program is currently in a lull and collaborative activities are still 'add--ons' to core activities of agency managers.…”
