Biodemoraphy and genetics of the Berba of Benin

Abstract: Genetic structure of the Berba of Benin was studied on the basis of biodemographic data and ABO, RH, MNS, KEL, JK, FY, ACP1, ADA, AK1, CA2, ESD, GLO1, G6PD, PGD, PGM1 (subtypes and thermostability), PGM2, PGP, SODA, HB alpha, HB beta, HB delta, BF, C3, and HP gene frequencies. Comparisons were carried out with other populations of Benin and of sub-Saharan Africa. Correspondence analysis revealed genetic differentiation among the three main groups of populations who inhabit sub-Saharan Africa: Bushmen-Hottentot… Show more

“…Two males showed G6PD variants with normal activity and an electrophoretic mobility slower (93%) than that of the B type. As the same electrophoretic variant has been found in Sicily, in southern Italy (Rickards et al, 1988), and in the Berba population of western Africa (Biondi et al, 1996), we propose an African origin for this allele, which moved to Sicily as a consequence of the uninterrupted gene flow from northern Africa and to the Americas during the slave trade.…”

“…They represent about 90% of the population in the area of Dassari and refer to themselves as natives [24] (p. 382). In archives and literature the opinion is prevalent that this ethnic group must have arrived from Burkina Faso a long time before the French colonization [25] (p. 533). Many of the Bialaba transited to Togo before finally settling in Benin, where part of the ethnic group can still be found [23] (p. 19).…”

“…According to Cornevin [68] The Biali, who constitute over 90% of the population in the Dassari area and proclaim themselves to be "natives" and "landowners" [69][70][71], are purported to have arrived there at an unknown time well before French colonization [72,73]. Being among the first migrants from Burkina Faso, the Biali, now having become "natives", are an ethnic group of more than 100,000 people throughout the area of Atacora, with its 549,417 inhabitants [74,75].…”
