1. Preserving genetic and phenotypic diversity can help safeguard not only biodiversity but also cultural and economic values. 2. Here, we present data that emerged from Indigenous‐led research at the intersection of evolution and ecology to support conservation planning of a culturally salient, economically valuable, and rare phenotypic variant. We addressed three conservation objectives for the white‐phased ‘Spirit bear’ polymorphism, a rare and endemic white‐coated phenotype of black bear (Ursus americanus) in Kitasoo/Xai'xais and Gitga'at Territories and beyond in coastal British Columbia, Canada. First, we used non‐invasively collected hair samples (n = 385 bears over ∼18,000 km2) to assess the spatial variation in the frequency of the allele that controls the white‐coloured morph (mc1r). Second, we compared our observed allele frequencies at mc1r with those expected under Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Finally, we examined how well current protected areas in the region aligned with spatial hotspots of Spirit bear alleles. 3. We found that landscape‐level allele frequency was lower than previously reported. For example our systematic sampling estimated a frequency of 0.25 (95% CI [0.13, 0.41]) on Gribbell Island compared with the previously reported estimate of 0.56. Also, in contrast with previous reports, we failed to detect a statistically significant departure from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium at mc1r, which calls into question the previously posited role of homozygote gene flow, heterozygote disadvantage, and positive assortative mating in the maintenance of this polymorphism. Finally, we found a discrepancy between the placement of protected areas and the 90th percentile hotspots (upper 10% of all estimated values) of Spirit bear alleles, with ∼50% of hotspots falling outside of protected areas. 4. These results provide new insight into hypotheses related to the maintenance of this rare polymorphism, and directly relevant information to support evidence‐based opportunities for Indigenous Nations of the area to attend to gaps in conservation planning.

El presente trabajo revela diferentes criterios y metodologías para el ejercicio de evaluación de proyectos de gestión ambiental. Aunado a la carencia de instrumentos de evaluación que incorporen indicadores de impacto de la dimensión biocultural, se constata la tendencia a privilegiar una valoración mercantilista de proyectos, incidiendo en la gestión ambiental. Con el apoyo teórico de la valoración relacional (relational values) y a través de la categorización de códigos emergentes de datos recabados a través de métodos etnográficos, el presente trabajo concluye con una propuesta para la aplicación de indicadores para conocer la incidencia en la dimensión biocultural en el caso de proyectos para el rescate de la meliponicultura, es decir, el cultivo de la abeja nativa comúnmente conocida como abeja melipona o Xunancab (en Maya) (Melipona beecheii), en la península de Yucatán.

Loss of knowledge about historical environmental conditions and species' abundances threatens how new generations potentially perceive their environment and take action. The intergenerational shift in perceptions of environmental thresholds is a phenomenon frequently termed, shifting baseline syndrome (SBS). The goals of this study were (i) to determine relationships between ordinal scores (e.g. few, many) and quantitative measures (e.g. estimates of population size) used by members of a Māori community in New Zealand to score indicators for understanding the abundance of forest resources; and (ii) to then analyse these relationships according to people's age to detect the effects of SBS and the rate that this shift was occurring for each indicator. We detected consistent relationships between the ordinal scores and quantitative measures for six forest indicators provided by community members. However, there was only a high degree of confidence about the direction of the age effect for three abundance indicators [kererū, NZ pigeon, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae, 15% increase (CI = 5.1-27.1%) in flock size for any given ordinal category for each decade increase in age; long-finned eel, Anguilla dieffenbachia, 30% decrease (CI =-45.1-11.3%) in the distance (m) walked along a riverbank between observations of an eel for any given ordinal category for each decade increase in age; and Australian brush-tailed possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, 27% decrease (CI =-38.9-13.9%) in the distance (m) walked through forest between observations of possum sign for any given ordinal category for each decade increase in age), but the effect was statistically strong for all three. The decoupling of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLC) from their traditional lands and biodiversity by an array of political, environmental, social and economic drivers and feedback mechanisms have contributed to and exacerbated the conditions for SBS. However, the protection of customary practices to engage with the environment, including the harvest of natural resources, community-based environmental monitoring initiatives, and cultural immersion education programmes offer opportunities for IPLC to mitigate the often deleterious effects of SBS.
