Biocomposites from hydrolyzed waste proteinaceous biomass: mechanical, thermal and moisture absorption performances

Abstract: The main goal of this research is maximizing the utilization of renewable materials in both the matrix and reinforcement, more importantly exploitation of waste material for biocomposite development and evaluating the mechanical, thermal and water resistance performances. Woven roving and chopped strand mat fiber glass, and hemp fiber mats are incorporated to an epoxy resin based matrix cured with novel hydrolyzed specified risk material (SRM) extracts. Aminophenyl sulphone (APS) is used as a control crosslink… Show more

“…Such materials are characterized by high tensile moduli, intermediate tensile strengths and relatively low elongations at break (Table 2) similarly to synthetic thermosetting plastics (Hanoosh & Abdelrazaq, 2009). Potential applications of these SRM-based plastic materials include adhesives, matrix of composites and biocomposites, concrete and flooring (El-Thaher et al, 2013b;Mekonnen et al, 2013b;Mekonnen et al, 2013a).…”

“…11,12 To further improve WG mechanical properties, optimal thermo-mechanical processing and the full understanding of the effects of moisture content are critical. 13,14 On one hand, the wheat gluten without plasticizer becomes brittle and difficult to handle 4 . Hence, a plasticizer is needed to lower the meltviscosity during the processing of WG and improve the toughness of the final product.…”

“…Thus, fulfilling more than one of them generally leads to multiple issues in material preparation procedures, and it usually also compromises the material's ultimate properties [1]. Research on eco-friendly plastics has become one of the main targets of modern industry [2][3][4][5], and the prospect of an oil shortage motivates the material industry to look into innovative sources. Ideal alternatives to traditionally synthesised monomers seem to be substrates of natural origin; therefore, extensive investigations into the usefulness of bio-based monomers, as well as natural fillers (e.g.…”
