Biocompatibility of mineral trioxide aggregate and three new endodontic cements: An animal study

Abstract: Background:Introducing new endodontic cements should await comprehensive investigations and new formulations have to be tested in vivo before applying in human beings. So, the purpose of this study was to compare the biocompatibility of new endodontic cements, calcium aluminate α-aluminate cement (CAAC), calcium aluminate α-aluminate plus cement (CAAC plus), and a mixture of wollastonite and CAAC cement (WOLCA) and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), in subcutaneous connective tissue of rats.Materials and Method… Show more

“…The materials used in endodontics, especially those used as root-end fillers, directly contact soft and hard periodontal tissues. Therefore, it is essential to adapt nontoxic and high-compatible substances [ 3 ]. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) is a root-end filler material that was first developed by Torabinejad et al in 1995 at the University of Loma Linda [ 4 ].…”

“…MTA Angelus can also stimulate the biomineralization process; it is also biocompatible and bioactive. [13][14][15][16] According to the manufacturer, the primary setting of this cement occurs within 15 minutes. This fast setting occurs due to the absence of sulfur and sudden hydration of tricalcium aluminate.…”
