Bioclimate of Italy: application of the worldwide bioclimatic classification system

Abstract: The worldwide bioclimatic classification system (WBCS) of Rivas-Martínez was applied to the Italian territory and surrounding areas between latitudes 35847 ′ -46860 ′ N and longitudes 5892 ′ -21839 ′ E. The 'WorldClim' precipitation and temperature dataset was used as the source data. Application of the WBCS in a geographic information system allowed the production of macrobioclimates, bioclimates, ombrotypes, continentality, compensated thermicity index and ombro-evaporal index maps at a scale of 1:5,500,000,… Show more

“…According to the worldwide bioclimatic classification system of Rivas-Martínez, the study area is included in a Mediterranean Pluviseasonal oceanic bioclimate, but close to the border with a Temperate Oceanic (Submediterranean) bioclimate (Pesaresi, Galdenzi, Biondi, & Casavecchia, 2014).…”

“…The pastoral landscape is characterized by semi-mesophylous Bromus erectus-dominated grasslands, referred to the Festuco-Brometea class. Mean annual precipitation from 1950 to 2000 was 1,100 mm, while mean summer rainfall (June, July and August) was 205 mm, with a short period of summer water deficit usually lasting from mid-July to mid-end August; average annual temperature was 11 °C (Pesaresi et al, 2014). Pastures undergo semi-extensive shepherding; traditionally pastoral activities start in June and continue until the end of October.…”
