Biochemical composition of Enicostemma littorale Blume extracts

Abstract: Analysis of organic solvent extracts of Enicostemma littorale reveals the presence of total phenols, vitamin C and E and carbohydrates. The organic solvent extracts of E. littorale exhibited antibacterial activities. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjb.v42i2.18046 Bangladesh J. Bot. 42(2): 367-369, 2013 (December)

“…are laminaribiitol (79.93%), 12-hydroxy-9-octadecenoic acid (9.546%), myricetin (4.7519), 3.3-methylenebis (4-hydroxycoumarin) (2.811). Cabechin (2.002) and the total phenolic content have been found to be approximately 5-6 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g DW (dry weight) (Abirami & Gomathinayagam 2013). Extract of the plant and its major phytochemical swertiamarin have been reported as antioxidant candidates (Vaijanathappa & Badami 2009).…”

“…littorale contains several antioxidant phytochemicals, including catechins, alkaloids, sterols, saponins, triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and xanthones. It contains many minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, silica, chloride, phosphate, carbonate, and sulfate [1]. Enicostemma littorale is known to have antibacterial [5], anti-inflammatory [4], antitumor [3,4], and antidiabetic [4] activities and E. littorale has been found to improve glucose-dependent insulin release.…”

“…In 2019, approximately 463 million adults (20-79 years old) were living with diabetes; by 2045, this number will rise to 700 million. The percentage of people with type 2 diabetes is increasing in most countries [1]. 79% of adults with diabetes lived in low and middle-income countries, 1 in 5 people over 65 have diabetes, and 1 in 2 people (232 million) with diabetes was undiagnosed.…”

“…Whereas animal research has thrown light on anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-malarial, hepatoprotective, hepatomodulatory, antihyperglycemic, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, antitumor, hypolipidemic and antihelminthic activities of phytochemicals. Swertiamarin should particularly be screened for large scale clinical trials [11][12][13][14][15] .The pharmacognostical characters reported in this work may serve as a valuable source of information and provide suitable diagnostic tool for the standardization as well as identification of adulterants in future investigation or application. It will also be immense useful to carry out further research and re-validation of its use.…”
