Bioavailability of the sodium pertechnetate and morphometry of organs isolated from rats: study of possible pharmacokinetic interactions of a ginkgo biloba extract

Abstract: Many compounds affect the bioavailability of radiobiocomplexes as radiopharmaceuticals. Ginkgo Biloba extract (EGb) has several effects. The influence of an EGb on the bioavailability of the radiobiocomplex sodium pertechnetate (Na99mTcO4) and on the morphometry of the organs was evaluated. Rats were treated with EGb and Na99mTcO4 was injected. The animals were sacrificed; the radioactivity in the organs was counted. The results showed that EGb altered the Na99mTcO4 bioavailability in the kidneys, liver and du… Show more

“…In nuclear medicine, a radiopharmaceutical presents a normal bioavailability that might be altered due to diseases and this fact is important to define the diagnosis of a disorder. Protocols that evaluate the bioavailability of radiopharmaceuticals have permitted to investigate the influence of certain synthetic drugs (Gomes et al, 2002;Jankovic and Djokic, 2005), natural products (Moreno et al, 2004), physical exercises (Llaurado et al, 1981;Ollenberger et al, 1998) and stimulation of acupuncture points (Senna-Fernandes et al, 2006;Souza et al, 2007). Occasionally, unconventional forms of treatment can cause unexpected results when modern diagnostic procedures are applied, as occurred with the patient in the study of Kuno and Cerqueira (1995).…”

“…Finally, the verification of similar inflammatory response in the gut of rats and mice with different genetic backgrounds validated this model of peanut allergy and provided an interesting way for the study of this mixed immune response to peanut proteins. Our group has been interested in the study of natural products derived from local plants as possible alternatives for anti-inflammatory drugs (Moreno et al, 2005). We are now conducting new experiments in which this animal model shall be used.…”

“…After this operation, the stomach is mostly bypassed and alterations are expected to occur on biodistribution. Several drugs and surgery may interfere with the biological behavior of radiopharmaceuticals used in scintigraphic examinations and technetium-99m pertechnetate is used in more than 80% of scintigraphic examinations [12][13][14] . They may change the biological effects of the technetium-99m pertechnetate and their uptake to some organs.…”
