The mechanisms of acupuncture are poorly understood. In consequence, numerous investigators have conducted clinical trials to test the efficacy of acupuncture in various conditions. We have used PubMed database system to evaluate the number of publications in acupuncture and nuclear medicine procedures in the period from 1964 to 2007, using the keywords: "nuclear medicine and acupuncture", " SPECT and acupuncture", "PET and acupuncture", "scintigraphy and acupuncture", "radionuclide and acupuncture", "radiopharmaceutical and acupuncture", "radioisotope and acupuncture" and " 99m Tc and acupuncture". Some papers published in English language were selected and a short review is presented The analysis of the number of publications shows that when a method is well accepted by the scientific community, as the methods used in nuclear medicine, the interest in the development of research increases. Moreover, important findings are presented when the nuclear medicine image is used to evaluate the effect of the acupuncture.
Background: The use of Acupuncture, part of Chinese Medicine, has grown as well as the need to understand its effects. The Quality of Life (QOL) assessment is an important way to have a global view of the patient. Objective: To assess the QoL of people who seek acupuncture at the outpatient clinic of an acupuncture school. Methods: QOL assessment using WHOQOL-BREF applied only once to people who voluntarily sought for acupuncture at the general outpatient clinic of Faculdade EBRAMEC in 2016. Results: People who sought for acupuncture treatment presented lower mean QoL value in all domains compared to normative values for Brazil, with physical domain presenting lower values than the other domains. It was also observed that male patients had higher values in the physical, psychological domains and general QOL compared to women. Conclusion: Our data demonstrated that people seeking for acupuncture treatment presented lower values of QOL in comparison to a referential study with a Brazilian population, providing for the first time reference values measured by WHOQOL-bref, for patients seeking for acupuncture in the city of São Paulo.
Background: The suffering caused by breast cancer treatments interferes with women's self-image and the couple's sexuality. Objective: To translate, adapt and validate SABIS Scale for women with breast cancer. Methodology: Psychometric study. Each scale was analyzed through face validity, content validity, internal consistency, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity, and discriminant validity. Results: The Body Image Scale obtained a two-factor structure and the Sexual Adjustment Scale a three-factor solution, with a variance of 80.02% and 83.5%, respectively. The confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the two-factor structure of the first scale and revealed a one-factor structure for the second scale. Both scales showed good fit indices. Conclusion:The psychometric properties of this version of the SABIS are similar to those of the original version. Therefore, it is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing the body image and sexual adjustment of Portuguese women with breast cancer.
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin characterized by facial papules, pustules, erythema, and telangiectasia. Emotional factors such as stress and anxiety may induce and aggravate the symptoms of rosacea. It is hypothesized that tongue acupuncture, a technique that has been used successfully in the treatment of various neurological and psychiatric diseases, could be beneficial in relieving rosacea symptoms. This study evaluated the immediate effect of tongue acupuncture at specific anatomical points in the treatment of rosacea. A case study was conducted on a 27 years old woman with the diagnosis of rosacea, complaining of redness, pustules, burning sensation, stinging, and itching on the face. The study used the tongue acupuncture points of heart, stomach, lung, and head. The temperature was measured with the thermograph (FlirE5) at room temperature (20 °C) within 1.0 meter distance from the patient and 1.5 meter distance from the ground. For this, photographs were taken three times, first, before starting the tongue acupuncture treatment, second, directly after the stimulation of the points, and third, fifteen minutes after acupuncture. A difference was observed fifteen minutes after acupuncture in the average temperature of the regions, right cheek (32.9 °C), left cheek (33.1 °C), and nose (33.6 °C). However, in the other regions, the temperature was maintained or slightly raised. The present study indicates that tongue acupuncture has immediate and slight effects over facial temperature, and can provide some relief in the symptoms. Further studies on a larger sample size must be conducted for a better understanding of the mechanisms of tongue acupuncture on dermatologic diseases such as rosacea.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
