Bioactivities of phytochemicals in Callistemon citrinus against multi-resistant foodborne pathogens, alpha glucosidase inhibition and MCF-7 cancer cell line

Abstract: This study investigates in-vitro activities of phytochemicals in Callistemon citrinus against multiresistant foodborne pathogens, alpha-glucosidase enzyme and MCF-7 cancer cell line. Assays were prepared with lyophilized extracts to determine antioxidant capacity, inhibition of a-glucosidase enzyme and growth of foodborne bacteria. Annexin-V detection kit was used for apoptosis detection and FT-IR spectroscopy to confirm structural and functional groups of phytochemicals. Cytotoxicity of the extracts against M… Show more

“…Lemon bottlebrush is utilized in folk medicine to treat several disorders, such as hemorrhoids, dysentery, rheumatism, tuberculosis, bronchitis, urinary incontinence, excessive menstruation, or mucosal discharge [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. Recently, Fayemi et al analyzed the bioactivities of phytochemicals in C. citrinus against multi-resistant food borne pathogens, α-glucosidase, and MCF-7 cancer cell line, with promising results [ 13 ]. Antimicrobial activity of lyophilized extracts from flowers and leaves of C. citrinus has also been reported against Listeria monocytogenes in beef burgers [ 14 ].…”

“…In our ongoing screening program for the discovery of natural anticancer agents, a CH 2 Cl 2 extract of Callistemon citrinus Stapf (Myrtaceae) , leaves collected from Egypt showed preferential cytotoxicity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells with a PC 50 value of 7.4 μg/mL. Callistemon species are used traditionally for treating hemorrhoids and gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders. , Callistemon extracts have exerted antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, , cardioprotective, and hepatoprotective effects . Recently, a series of triketone-phloroglucinol-monoterpene hybrids named “callistrilone” has been reported from C. rigidus . In our present study, C. citrinus active extract was subjected to phytochemical investigation, which resulted in the isolation of three new structurally challenging meroterpenoids each existing in a distinct equilibrium mixture of two conformational isomers, named callistrilones L–N ( 1 – 3 ), together with 14 known compounds ( 4 – 17 ).…”

“…These species were also found to be used in the management of many more ailments across the world. Such ailments ranged from infectious diseases of all etiologies (parasites, viruses, bacteria, and fungi) (58,66,81,82,84), to non-communicable complications such as diabetes, hemorrhoids, and snakebites among others (27,45,67,82). This therapeutic heterogeneity is indicative of the enormous roles these plants can play in advancing global health and economic development.…”
