Tentative identification of primary and secondary metabolites in aqueous extracts from aerial parts of Verbascum betonicifolium Kuntze was done. This plant belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family and is used for several treatments in folk medicine. One of the processes commonly used to prepare this plant for consumption is boiling with water during approximately 20 minutes, that is, a decoction process. After filtration, this decoction was analysed in search for bioactive metabolites. The analysis was carried out by Electro-Spray Ionization (ESI) and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) was done using a Quadropole Time-of-Flight (QToF, Impact II, Bruker), coupled to an Ultra High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC, ELUTE autosampler, Bruker). The analysis was done in the negative mode (ESI-) and the identification was accomplished using the molecular formula suggestions from the Data Analysis 4.4™ software from Bruker and some databases, like Metlin and PubChem, always confirming with MS/MS results. These data can be used for finding biomarkers between Verbascum sps or to complementary medicine practitioners to get a scientific based knowledge of their results. These data are the unpublished supplementary materials related to “Bioactivities of Iridoids and flavonoids present in decoctions from aerial parts of Verbascum betonicifolium ” (Fadel et al., 2020, submitted).

The aim of current study was to investigate a wild plant, known by purple milk thistle (Galactites tomentosa), very abundant in El-Kala National Park and the Mediterranean basin. This study was designed to evaluate the antibacterial activity effects of the Galactites tomentosa. The extract was further analyzed by spectrophotometry, to measure the sugars (5,51 ± 0,04 mg/g DM), the proteins (14,86 ± 0,30 g/100g DM), polyphenols (12,24 ± 0,10 GAE mg/g DM), and chlorophyll pigments (1,13 ± 0,20 mg/g FM). This work is considered as an introduction to the valuation of El-Kala National Park (EKNP) plants, for the development of the food and pharmaceutical industry.

Diospyros kaki known as Persimmon has played an important role in Chinese medicine, and its leaves are used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and beverages due to their biological properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate chemical composition, antioxidant activity, enzyme inhibition. The main compounds of Diospyros kaki leaves decoctions were identified using high-resolution liquid chromatography – high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS-MS) interfaced with a Quadrupole Time-of-Flight (Q-tof). The obtained results showed that the aqueous extract had a high content of total phenolsand flavonoids and showed strong antioxidant activity (EC50 between 3.79±0.19 and 12.05±0.11µg/mL). In addition, these extracts were able to inhibit3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaril-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase and acetylcholinesterase (IC50 ranging from 58.35±0.69 to 210.21±28.9 µg/mL). The cytotoxicity against human liver cells HepG2 and breast MCF7 cell lines was also evaluated. No cytotoxicity to HepG2 and MCF7 cells was detected. These results indicate that Diospyros kaki leaves could be considered as attractive source of health-promoting ingredients and a promising plant for the development of new functional foods and pharmaceutical products.
