Bioactive Secondary Metabolites from Schizogyne sericea (Asteraceae) Endemic to Canary Islands

Abstract: Schizogyne sericea (Asteraceae) is a halophytic shrub endemic to the Canary Islands and traditionally employed as analgesic, astringent, anti-inflammatory, and vulnerary. A comprehensive phytochemical investigation was conducted on the flowering aerial parts by analyzing both essential oil constituents and polar compounds. The essential oil was dominated by p-cymene, with the noteworthy occurrence of β-pinene and thymol esters. From the EtOH extract, eight compounds were isolated and structurally elucidated. E… Show more

“…However, as the hydrophobic nature of CSEO, for its practical administration in vivo or clinical trials, it should be formulated; thus, its nanoformulated form (CSChiNPs) was the best sample against A-375 cells. Interestingly, IC 50 s of CSChiNPs and CLChiNPs (0.03 and 0.124 μg/mL) against A-375 were more potent than cisplatin with IC 50 of 0.40–0.45 μg/mL [ 29 , 44 ]. Their efficacies against MDA-MB-468 (23.65 and 40.32 μg/mL) were also comparable or more potent than cisplatin (IC 50 32.50 μg/mL) [ 45 ].…”

“…A number of studies have shown a lack or a weak antibacterial activity of this metabolite against P. aeruginosa [ 46 , 47 ], however, others studies have found approximately MIC values similar to ours of di-CQA against P. aeruginosa . It is the case with the study of Venditti et al [ 48 ] but merely the study of Lehbili et al [ 49 ] also using a multiple inoculator and indicating a MIC value of 125 µg·mL −1 , but results may be strain-dependent.…”

“…p -Cymene is an aromatic monoterpene occurring in high levels in the essential oil from Schizogyne sericea (L.f.) DC [36] and functions as precursors of phenolics as thymol and carvacrol [37,38,39,40]. It is a strong perturbator of cell membrane and can synergize the effects of other active compounds, such as ascaridole [26,38,39,40].…”
