Bioactive Natural Products from the Marine-Derived Penicillium brevicompactum OUCMDZ-4920

Abstract: A mycophenolic acid producing strain OUCMDZ-4920, identified as Penicillium brevicompactum, was isolated from a marine sediment (-68 m) collected in South China Sea by means of intergrated chemical and bioactive screening method. Eleven compounds including mycophenolic acid (3) and its seven analogues (1, 2 and 4~8) were isolated from a nutrient-poor fermentation broth of P. brevicompactum OUCMDZ-4920, among which (±)-brevicolides A (1) and B (2) were new compounds. On the bases of spectroscopic and electronic… Show more

“…The antimicrobial activities of compounds 1−4 against fungi and bacteria were determined using the filter paper disk method. 16 The pathogenic bacteria (S. aureus subsp. aureus ATCC6538, P. aeruginosa ATCC10145, E. coli ATCC11775, E. aerogenes ATCC 13048, and B. subtilis ATCC 6051) and fungi (C. glabrata ATCC2001 and C. albicans ATCC10231) were purchased from the China General Microbiological Culture Collection Center.…”

“…Mycophenolic acid (MPA) (Figure 6), produced by the fermentation and metabolism of Penicillium brevicompactum, has anti-tumor, antiviral, immunosuppressive, and antiinflammatory activities [94][95][96][97]. Chen et al isolated MPA from marine-derived Penicillium brevicompactum OUCMDZ-4920 that showed strong cytotoxicity to HT-29, with an IC 50 of 5.47 µmol/L [98]. Li et al demonstrated that MPA induced apoptosis in SW620 cells through the caspase-3 pathway; the cell nucleus showed obvious pyknosis, and the cell growth cycle was arrested in the G1/S phase after the action of MPA on SW620 [99].…”
