In recent years, there has been considerable interest in using microalgal lipids in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Several microalgal species can accumulate appreciable lipid quantities and therefore are characterized as oleaginous. In cosmetic formulations, lipids and their derivatives are one of the main ingredients. Different lipid classes are great moisturizing, emollient, and softening agents, work as surfactants and emulsifiers, give consistence to products, are color and fragrance carriers, act as preservatives to maintain products integrity, and can be part of the molecules delivery system. In the past, chemicals have been widely used but today’s market and customers’ demands are oriented towards natural products. Microalgae are an extraordinary source of lipids and other many bioactive molecules. Scientists’ attention to microalgae cultivation for their industrial application is increasing. For the high costs associated, commercialization of microalgae and their products is still not very widespread. The possibility to use biomass for various industrial purposes could make microalgae more economically competitive.

Las formulaciones cosméticas para el cuidado de la piel y el maquillaje son generalmente mezclas complejas y todos sus componentes influyen en su eficacia. Debido a su afinidad con la piel humana, los aceites y los ingredientes grasos son componentes esenciales. Las grasas se encuentran principalmente en formas líquidas dispersas, polvos y formas sólidas de maquillaje como emulsiones, lociones, sueros, barras de labios, sombras de ojos o máscaras. Si la petroquímica condujo a la aparición de nuevos compuestos definidos y neutros, los cambios recientes en el consumo muestran un mayor interés en las sustancias sostenibles de origen natural. Este artículo se centra en los aceites vegetales, mantequillas, ceras, alcoholes grasos y ésteres de origen natural. Describe los principales utilizados actualmente en cosmetología, su química, impacto dentro de las fórmulas, propiedades y su contribución a la eficacia cosmética.

Development of an All-Marine 3D Printed Bioactive Hydrogel Dressing for Treatment of Hard-to-Heal Wounds

Current standard wound care involves dressings that provide moisture and protection; however, dressings providing active healing are still scarce and expensive. We aimed to develop an ecologically sustainable 3D printed bioactive hydrogel-based topical wound dressing targeting healing of hard-to-heal wounds, such as chronic or burn wounds, which are low on exudate. To this end, we developed a formulation composed of renewable marine components; purified extract from unfertilized salmon roe (heat-treated X, HTX), alginate from brown seaweed, and nanocellulose from tunicates. HTX is believed to facilitate the wound healing process. The components were successfully formulated into a 3D printable ink that was used to create a hydrogel lattice structure. The 3D printed hydrogel showed a HTX release profile enhancing pro-collagen I alpha 1 production in cell culture with potential of promoting wound closure rates. The dressing has recently been tested on burn wounds in Göttingen minipigs and shows accelerated wound closure and reduced inflammation. This paper describes the dressings development, mechanical properties, bioactivity, and safety.
