Lipids from Microalgae for Cosmetic Applications

Abstract: In recent years, there has been considerable interest in using microalgal lipids in the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Several microalgal species can accumulate appreciable lipid quantities and therefore are characterized as oleaginous. In cosmetic formulations, lipids and their derivatives are one of the main ingredients. Different lipid classes are great moisturizing, emollient, and softening agents, work as surfactants and emulsifiers, give consistence to products, are color and fr… Show more

“…Euglena gracilis is a microalga that produces a large quantity of wax-ester as a byproduct of the biodegradation of storage polysaccharides. These wax-esters are now used in biofuel generation but could possibly be useful in cosmetics [154]. Waxes, for example, are important components in lipsticks because they give the stick sufficient rigidity, hardness, stability, and texture.…”

“…Moreover, the demand for algal neutral lipids is recently increasing in cosmeceutical and food industries as a replacement of extracted plants due to their high productivity. These are usually used in cosmetic products as fragrance carriers, neutral bases, and bioactive ingredients for their moisturizing and softening properties, and for providing texture [ 36 ]. Chlamydomonas was certified as ‘Generally Recognized As Safe’ (GRAS), and its pharmaceutical industrial application is increasing in the global market.…”

“…Certainly, aging is a natural and inevitable process, but the incorporation of emollient components in topical formulations can be effective in preventing dehydration and in maintaining skin health. Vegetable oils have emollient properties and are therefore frequently used in dermatological and cosmetic formulations [12].…”
