Abstract: The present study was designed to investigate the topographical distribution of seminal plasma (SP) proteins on epididymal and ejaculated bovine sperm. Using immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy the binding patterns of bovine SP proteins BSP-A3, albumin, transferrin, prostaglandin Dsynthase (PGDS) and nucleobindin in ejaculated and cauda epididymal sperm from adult bulls were evaluated. Experiments were performed using sperm from 5 males. Data showed a positive signal, only detected for anti-PGDS, in th… Show more

“…Moreover, in Tankwa goats the fertility-associated antigen showed a positive relationship with rapid velocity, VCL, VAP, sperm cell vitality and normal sperm cells. The results of the current study agree with those of the literature, as it has been indicated that proteins have a good relationship with semen quality and male fertility in other species (Ding et al, 2007;Souza et al, 2011). As a result, proteins are regarded as a valuable male fertility marker in conjunction with semen parameters in other species (Dawson et al, 2002;Dyck et al, 2011).…”

“…Although several proteins appeared common to both cauda epididymal and vesicular fluid, such as transferrin, albumin and clusterin, others became visible only in CEF gels of the present study, such as α-enolase and prostaglandin D synthase (PGDS). PGDS binds to the acrosomal cap of sperm from both the cauda epididymis and ejaculates [90] and its expression in the seminal plasma is related to bull fertility [7]. As a hypothesis, PGDS would act as a carrier of lipophilic components (such as retinol and testosterone) in the epididymis or across the epididymal-blood barrier [91], but knowledge of the exact mechanism by which PGDS functions in male reproduction is incomplete.…”
