Binary-Quintuple Progression Based 12-Switch 25-Level Converter With Nearest Level Modulation Technique for Grid-Tied and Standalone Applications

Abstract: This paper introduces a cascaded packed U cell (CPUC) multilevel converter (MLC) to achieve a higher-level count in converter voltage with a minimum number of switches. Here, two five-level PUC topologies are connected in a cascaded manner to obtain twenty-five levels in its output converter voltage. The switch count in CPUC is reduced to 12, as compared to the number of semiconductor devices used for obtaining 25 levels in converter output. A binary-quintuple progression is used for selection of voltage ratio… Show more

“…Hybrid MLCs also require more active and passive components [4][5]. Now, in single\three phase MLCs, it plays a pivotal role to convert DC to AC power by less number of active switches, with better efficiency [6][7][8].…”

“…The modified carrier techniques are discussed for power quality improvement of a single‐source solar converter [22]. The real‐time investigation of a new solar converter topology with nearest level control is discussed in [23]. The real‐time validation of an eleven‐level packed U cell converter is discussed in [24].…”

“…A grid-connected SC-MLI has been presented in [29] that uses two PUC inverters and generates 25-level. The advantage of this topology is low TSV and low components, but to charge the capacitors it needs a proper control strategy and also sensors that make it complex and costly to achieve high voltage levels.…”
